'Player of interest': Sheffield Wednesday target free-agent who's 'keen' on Championship move - journalist

Sheffield Wednesday are looking to bolster their midfield after losing Will Vaulks, George Byers, Momo Diaby and Tyreeq Bakinson.

With rumours of Josh Windass‘ potential exit emerging in recent days, Sheffield Wednesday could be left with only Barry Bannan as their recognised central midfielder.

Having bolstered the backline early doors, the Owls could now move further up the pitch to bring in some teammates for Bannan.

Wednesday have already added two free agents to their ranks and could now look to add a third after scouting out a player from Danny Rohl’s home country.

Svante Ingelsson is ‘keen’ to move to the Championship

According to journalist Alex Miller, Svante Ingelsson is a ‘player of interest’ to the Owls.

He wrote on X: “As broken by @footballtyper, understand 26yo Swedish midfielder Svante Ingelsson is a player of interest to Owls. Player keen on Champ move. Free agent after invalidation of contract at Hansa Rostock. Two GER clubs int’d. Nilsson link.”

The Swede previously played in Serie A with Udinese, before joining 2. Bundesliga outfit FC Hansa Rostock in June 2021.

Ingelsson has racked up three goals and 13 assists in 87 matches for the German club, most recently making 28 starts as they were relegated back to the third division.

His versatility has come in really handy for Hansa, having played 16 games as an attacking midfielder this term, but also being deployed as a centre-forward, left winger, central midfielder and a left midfielder.

Despite having two years left on his contract, Hansa’s relegation means the midfielder is able to leave on a free transfer.

Wednesday are said to be one club interested in signing him, while they also face competition from two German sides.

However, Ingelsson is said to be ‘keen’ to make the move to the Championship and could be tempted to work with Rohl.

Is this the end of Josh Windass at Sheffield Wednesday?

The 26-year-old isn’t a complete stranger to the Owls, having previously worked under Wednesday icon Roland Nilsson during his time in the Sweden youth teams.

Wednesday have so far done some brilliant business in the free agent market and may be onto another bargain.

Very little is known about Ingelsson in the Championship, but Rohl clearly has him on his radar and there is no doubt that fans trust the head coach to get his signings right.

The midfielder’s potential arrival could suggest that Windass will leave the club, with Ingelsson likely to adopt a similar role in the starting line-up.

Supporters will be disappointed to see the 30-year-old leave Hillsborough, but bringing in a replacement immediately is definitely the best way to handle the situation.
