Report: Sheffield Wednesday 'firmly in the race' to sign Manchester United man on a free transfer

Sheffield Wednesday are reportedly in the race to sign a Manchester United youngster on a free transfer this summer.

Sheffield Wednesday have wasted no time in readying themselves for the 2024/25 Championship season, after their great escape under Danny Rohl last time round.

The Owls finished in 20th place of the table after winning their final three games of the season, with Rohl having since signed a new three-year deal.

Following that, Sheffield Wednesday have welcomed in three new players, with Ben Hamer and Max Lowe joining on free transfers, and Yan Valery signing on a permanent deal from Angers.

The Owls look set to scour the free agent market once again this summer. But Rohl will be hoping that the club can add some more youth to their ageing squad.

Now, Sheffield Wednesday have been linked with a move for Manchester United youngster Charlie McNeill.

McNeill, 20, is a product of the Manchester United youth academy, who scored three goals in 11 Premier League 2 appearances last season.

McNeill spent time on loan with Stevenage in League One last season, albeit briefly, scoring once in three league games for the club.

He’s out of contract this summer and looks set to leave Old Trafford on a free transfer. An emerging claim from The Championship Chat Podcast now says that Sheffield Wednesday are ‘firmly in the race’ to sign McNeill on a permanent transfer this summer.

The two things Sheffield Wednesday need in the transfer market this summer

This summer promises to be a very busy but very exciting one for Sheffield Wednesday, who look set to turn a corner under Rohl, and lay some proper foundations for the future of the club.

One thing Rohl desperately needs is new strikers with Josh Windass looking set to leave, and a return for Ike Ugbo looking like it could prove difficult.

The other is youth; Sheffield Wednesday boasted the oldest squad in the Championship last season and are in desperate need of some youthfulness in the side.

McNeill is both a striker and young. He’s someone who’s had a good football upbringing with United and now looks ready to head out and gain some proper first-team experience.

At this point, very little is known about what type of player McNeill is. But his age and background suggests that he’s a player who could go on to become a really valuable asset for Sheffield Wednesday.

On a free transfer too, this could be a very shrewd deal for the Owls if they can get it over the line.
