'A smart bit of business': Pundit fond of Sheffield Wednesday move for potential Ike Ugbo alternative

The former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder has praised Danny Rohl’s dealings so far, with links to a new striker being deemed a ‘smart’ move.

Sheffield Wednesday will be looking to build on a successful Championship season in 2023/24 under German boss Danny Rohl, who has significantly turned around the fortunes in S6 since the start of last season.

Fan favourites Barry Bannan and Liam Palmer have been tied down to contracts for the new season and Championship pedigree is coming through the doors at Hillsborough, as well as former Premier League wing-back Yan Valery.

However, one transfer target that Wednesday have struggled to sign following a successful loan spell is Canadian international Ike Ugbo, who scored seven for the Owls in the 2023/24 campaign to help them achieve survival.

Sheffield Wednesday haven’t long mourned the loss of Ugbo as they already have their replacement lined up.

Carlton Palmer on Sheffield Wednesday target Sory Kaba

Sheffield Wednesday are targeting Sory Kaba at Las Palmas; he’s best known in England for a positive loan spell with Cardiff City in 2022/23 in which he scored eight in 17 Championship games.

The Guinean international scored just one in the 2023/24 La Liga campaign for Las Palmas after joining last summer.

Speaking to Football League World about the Owls’ front line, Carlton Palmer said: “They need that focal point, Ugbo was a brilliant signing for them and it’s a shame they can’t make that a permanent transfer.

“I think they need to bring in a couple of strikers and that’s where Danny Rohl is looking. If Kaba is available on a free, that could prove to be a smart bit of business.

“Sheffield Wednesday are doing their business early and Danny Rohl is bringing in some quality players.”

Kaba could be the fifth arrival this summer for Sheffield Wednesday, following the potential arrival of Svante Ingelsson, as Rohl looks to push the Owls up the table in 2024/25.

Can Sory Kaba replace Ike Ugbo at Sheffield Wednesday

Kaba’s record in La Liga in the 2023/24 season makes for fairly grim reading as he managed to find the net just once as he was sidelined by former Everton striker Sandro Ramirez.

However, what the 28-year-old should be judged on is his prolific spell with Cardiff City in the second half of the 2022/23 season, where he scored a prolific eight goals in 17 appearances.

Kaba offers an alternative attacking threat to Ugbo, with the striker standing at a lofty 6ft 3in.

Set-pieces will be utilised by Rohl this season, particularly after tying Bannan down to a further year at the club.

It may take time for Wednesday to adapt to his playing style, which may be more similar to the likes of Lee Gregory, who was given limited game time under Rohl last season, however if Kaba hits a patch of confidence, he has the talents to score for fun.
