Alan Shearer gives verdict on Martin Dubravka's performance at Euro 2024 for Slovakia so far

Newcastle United could be reasonably well represented at a huge Euro 2024 clash on Sunday.

Indeed, Anthony Gordon may finally get a chance to impress for England after his brief cameo against Slovenia, while Kieran Trippier could continue at left-back for the Three Lions.

Gareth Southgate’s side are handed a favourable chance to make it to the quarter-finals despite an underwhelming time of things in Germany thus far, meeting Slovakia in Gelsenkirchen.

They will of course be strong favourites but it is not as if Slovakia are without recognisable players.

Defender Milan Skriniar is perhaps the most household name to the general public but Newcastle fans will know all about a certain Martin Dubravka.

The goalkeeper was called upon to replace Nick Pope after his injury in December but did not always cover himself in glory.

Still, he will almost certainly start for his country on Sunday and club legend Alan Shearer has now delivered his verdict on Dubravka’s performances.

Alan Shearer delivers Martin Dubravka verdict before England vs Slovakia

Speaking about the veteran shot stopper on The Rest is Football Podcast, Shearer said: “I thought that the [Roman] Yaremchuk goal [vs Ukraine], remember when he took that touch, I thought he could have done better for that goal. I don’t think he was the bravest keeper in the world for that.”

Martin Dubravka could make a decision on his Newcastle future imminently

Interestingly, England could inadvertently play a part in seeing Dubravka leave Newcastle imminently.

Believed to have been deemed disposable by Newcastle as they pursue the signing of a new goalkeeper themselves, the 35-year-old will seemingly make a decision on his future after the European Championship.

With England strong favourites to progress on Sunday, that decision could be made very soon indeed.

Dubravka has been a good servant for Newcastle but with the likes of James Trafford on the club’s transfer wishlist, it feels like a natural time to part ways.

Given some of his performances at club level this season, England will be fancying their chances…
