'Not ideal': England star Eberechi Eze gives update on Newcastle's Anthony Gordon at Euro 2024

It will be fascinating to see what becomes of Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon at Euro 2024.

After such a strong season for Newcastle, there has been clamour to start the 23-year-old amid a relatively underwhelming campaign from England thus far.

Gareth Southgate, however, is yet to truly unleash Gordon.

The former Everton winger has been afforded only a few minutes, albeit he did impress during them despite an otherwise drab draw with Slovenia.

People close to the squad have reportedly been openly asking why neither Gordon nor Cole Palmer have featured more regularly, such is the desire to see the pair try to freshen things up.

Whether or not he starts against Slovakia on Sunday of course remains to be seen but Gordon was involved in something of a scare in the build-up.

The Newcastle star fell off his bike in England training and grazed his chin, which is hardly ideal preparation.

Teammate Eberechi Eze has provided an update.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Eze said of Gordon: “He is all good. Not ideal, but it is what it is. He is good. He has not no problems. No worries. I was riding behind, to be fair, but I didn’t actually see what happened, but I know that he is all good now, which is the most important thing.”

Anthony Gordon surely has to start for England now

Talked up by Kieran Trippier for his performances in training, it’s got to the point where not seeing Gordon start for England would be strange.

Phil Foden has hardly set the world alight – albeit he is not alone in that – and left the camp earlier this week to attend the birth of his third child.

While not to criticise Foden for that, it is hardly ideal preparation for a huge knockout game in which there will be huge pressure on England to progress.

Gordon has surely done enough. He deserves his chance and it is positive to hear there is no serious issue despite his scare in training.
