'I can see him being a Spurs player': 'Elite' 26-goal striker could really join Tottenham now - journalist

Tottenham Hotspur fans have been given some encouragement in their side’s pursuit of a prolific striker this summer.

Ange Postecoglou is looking for reinforcements as he gears up for his second season in North London. Spurs could do with additions in a number of areas of the pitch.

A new striker has to be high up on Tottenham’s agenda.

Postecoglou decided against signing an out-and-out centre-forward to replace Harry Kane in the summer of 2023, but that stance is expected to change in this window.

Journalist Ben Jacobs has some positive news regarding one striker Tottenham have been linked with this summer.

The latest on Tottenham’s interest in Jonathan David

Lille’s Jonathan David has been linked with a move to Tottenham for a long time.

The Canadian is currently on international duty at the Copa America, but his future almost certainly lies away from Lille.

The French club’s president has already confirmed that he is ready to sell David this summer, and Tottenham are among the clubs interested in him.

Jacobs has shared the latest on David now, and he has revealed that three other Premier League clubs are keeping an eye on the ‘elite‘ Lille star along with Spurs.

Those clubs are Manchester United, Chelsea and West Ham, but as things stand, Jacobs has claimed that he can see David becoming a Tottenham player this summer because they are one of the frontrunners.

Speaking on the Last Word on Spurs podcast, the journalist said: “Yeah, I can see him being a Spurs player. I think Spurs are one of the frontrunners for Jonathan David. There are four Premier League teams that are in the mix – you’ve got Chelsea, even though they’ve signed a couple of young strikers, Tottenham, West Ham and Manchester United.

Manchester United, at the moment, are the most distant because they’re focusing on Joshua Zirkzee and the other three could still move. And this isn’t anything new, I think I did a show about a year ago where I said Jonathan David and Spurs, watch it, and this is again because Fabio Patarici has been there pre-Postecoglou and there is some consistency in terms of recruitment targets.

“So, there was an outside chance that an offer would have been placed for Jonathan David 12 months ago by Tottenham but the price was too high. The key thing that’s changed now is that David’s heading into the final year of his contract and Lille know that he’s not going to renew and they accept that it’s better to take a fee now than risk losing him on a free transfer in a year’s time. And, because there’s only that one year, Lille are not being bullish anymore.

“So, Lille were looking at £45 or 50 million a year ago, whereas now, the price is going to be under £30 million, and with the right structure, it might even be closer to £20 million, and that’s an astonishing bit of business for any club for, as you say, a striker that scored 26 goals in all competitions in the last two seasons.

“The amount of times on this podcast you probably hear ‘that’s not a Daniel Levy deal or that’s not a Daniel Levy price’, but in the case of Jonathan David, it’s both a Daniel Levy deal and a Daniel Levy price. That’s why I think that Spurs will be seriously in the conversation for Jonathan David.”

What Jonathan David will bring to Tottenham

David is nearly the perfect package as a centre-forward.

Yes, he doesn’t have the physical capabilities to be a target man, but apart from that, he possesses all the attributes you would want from a striker.

The Canada international can run in behind as well as drop deep to receive the ball and link play up. His close control is very, very good and he can drift to either side of the pitch to interchange positions with the wingers.

David’s best trait, however, is his finishing. The 24-year-old is lethal inside the box – he scored 26 goals in each of the last two seasons, which is an excellent return.

Tottenham are right to target David, and we think he would be a great option for Spurs this summer.
