Report: How many points Newcastle could actually have been docked before accelerating transfer moves

Newcastle United have been in something of a rush of late.

They have needed to raise funds before the deadline for the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules to be adhered to on June 30, although it is believed that ‘near miss’ business could still be added beyond that date.

As such, Newcastle are being forced into hard decisions.

The club did not particularly want to sell Yankuba Minteh, though it now looks as if he’s ready to join Brighton despite the protests of some of Newcastle’s backroom staff.

Eddie Howe was also believed to want to keep a hold of Elliot Anderson, but he appears ready to join Nottingham Forest.

If it means keeping star players in Anthony Gordon, Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimaraes at St James’ Park, then it looks like the right decision – at least in the short-term.

Not only does it help keep those names, it stops Newcastle risking a points deduction.

The likes of Luke Edwards have revealed how the club were “panicking” as the deadline approached but the fact they’ve managed to accelerate the departure of two players is a boost, even if not an ideal one.

How many points Newcastle could have been deducted by the Premier League

That’s because according to the Daily Mail, the club risked a huge ten-point deduction from the Premier League had they broken PSR rules.

It is unclear as to whether or not an appeal could have softened that blow but either way, that would hardly be good news.

For context, had Newcastle finished ten points below their tally of 60 last season, they would have been in tenth.

Newcastle’s owners have been frustrated for a while now

Even back in January, PIF were reportedly making it clear that they were frustrated by the limitations the FFP rules put on them.

Still, just because they’re frustrated by them, it doesn’t mean they should not be taken seriously.

Quite why the business was left so late and caused so many unsettling rumours will surely need some explaining.
