Report: If Aaron Ramsdale leaves, Arsenal could make move to sign £21m Real Madrid target this summer

Arsenal are now lining up a goalkeeper wanted by Real Madrid if Aaron Ramsdale does indeed find a new club this summer.

Given David Raya is now Arsenal’s firm number one, it’s more than understandable that Ramsdale will seek a new challenge this summer, hoping to become crucial to a new project.

The England international, who is currently at Euro 2024 as Gareth Southgate’s number two, has made so much progress during his time at the Emirates.

But Ramsdale lost his confidence as well as his starting spot last season, explaining why a fresh start would suit all parties.

That being said, a few goalkeepers have been linked with the soon-to-be vacant spot at Arsenal.

Feyenoord’s Justin Bjilow was touted as someone who could come in as back-up, whereas Real Madrid’s Andriy Lunin would perhaps be more of a direct challenge for Raya.

But according to a report by The Athletic, it seems as if Inaki Cana will welcome more of a traditional number two to his goalkeeping department should Ramsdale depart.

Espanyol keeper Joan Garcia is top of Arsenal’s list to replace Aaron Ramsdale

According to the report mentioned, Espanyol number two Joan Garcia ‘features high on Arsenal’s contingency plan’ in the event that Ramsdale goes.

The Spaniard has a €25m release clause in his contract, but Arsenal believe they could sign Garcia for less.

The 23-year-old is known for his ability with his feet, whilst also sharing a similar high-claim success rate to Raya.

Garcia will represent Spain at the Olympics this summer and kept eight clean sheets in his 14 appearances in all competitions this season.

And to that end, Real Madrid have been credited with interest in signing Garcia – who may be in the market to replace Lunin should he leave.

Of course, should all of these reports prove true, it would demonstrate that Arteta was protecting Ramsdale last summer when claiming that his two keepers were equal, both competing for the spot.

Should Arsenal sign Garcia, it would clearly prove that Arteta would be happy to have an obvious number two to Raya.

That being said, Garcia isn’t the only player Arsenal could be attempting to sign from Spain right now.

And it seems as if Barcelona may actually consider a deal with Arsenal for Jules Kounde.
