2022 NORTH AMERICAN CAR AND TRUCK OF THE YEAR SHORTLIST IS INCREDIBLE

The semi-finalists for the North American Car, Truck, And Utility Of The Year (NACTOY) were announced at the recent Motor Bella festival in Michigan. Out of the 36 eligible vehicles, 23 will be competing for the top positions: eight cars, six trucks, and nine utility vehicles.

North American Car of the Year Competitors

For the 2022 North American Car of the Year, we have the Audi A3, Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing, Genesis G70, Honda Civic, Lucid Air, Volkswagen Golf MK VIII, and the Mercedes EQS and Mercedes S-Class. This segment has some pretty exciting competitors this year, with the Lucid Air being an Electric Vehicle that produces a base horsepower of 933 horsepower. The Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing is also a powerful car with 668 horsepower, and hair-raising performance that’s regarded as the best in the segment right now. The Mercedes-EQS is within that range as well, with 649 ponies, and we certainly hope these three make it to the final cut of contestants.

North American Truck of the Year Competitors

The 2022 North American Truck of the Year shortlist is probably the most interesting of them all. If not for anything other than the variety. That’s because we have the new Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz redefining small truck, along with the mammoth GMC Hummer EV, and Rivian R1T which are purely electric. These revolutionary machines are also pitted against the redesigned Nissan Frontier and Toyota Tundra, which take on a traditional formula.

It’ll be interesting to see which ones make it as the finalists, but with many people being quite fond of the Rivian R1Ts performance after its release, it may not be that surprising to see it reach the podium. Then again, with the class-leading numbers of the Hummer, and the approachability of the Maverick, it could be anybody’s contest.

Lastly is the North American Utility Vehicle of the Year, which probably has more gravity than either the truck or car awards, considering the sales volume of the overall segment. Contenders include the Ford Bronco, Genesis GV70, Hyundai loniq 5, Hyundai Tucson, 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee, Jeep Wagoneer / Grand Wagoneer, Kia Carnival, Nissan Pathfinder, and Volkswagen ID.4. So here we see a mix of new-age electrification with the Ioniq 5 and ID.4, clashing with the rebirth of cherished icons with the WL Grand Cherokee, new Wagoneer, and much-talked-about Bronco.

The panel of judges that will be testing the vehicles to select the finalists will announce the winners at the Los Angeles Auto Show on November 17th, and we’ll know who the winners are in January of 2022.
