Mustang California Special: Additional Details

When the Ford Mustang first hit the streets in 1964, owners’ clubs popped up across America, with many regional dealers creating their own personalized designs. One design inspired by the 1967 Shelby GT notchback coupe prototype came to be called the California Special. The original version features a blacked-out grille, fog lights, and side racing stripes that ended ahead of new rear side air scoops, as well as a Shelby-inspired spoiler. Ford was impressed by the design and put a limited number of California Special cars into production for 1958.

The newest interpretation reflects the original with a honeycomb front grille finished in Ebony Black. Additionally, the car features a GT/CS badge in Race Red and lower side stripes finished in black, red, and grey. Incorporating GT/CS logos, the stripes run from the front to rear wings and feature a hidden “California Special” script that is almost invisible in low light conditions but becomes prominent in stronger sunlight.

Pricing for the 2022 Ford Mustang California Special in Europe will start at £52,105 in the UK and €60,800 in Germany before options. Based on current exchange rates, that’s about $68,760 and $66,230, respectively.
