Demand for all-electric vehicles is at an all-time high. Multiple manufacturers are simply struggling to keep up, perhaps no one feels this more than GMC and their Hummer EV. While deliveries are ongoing, you may be in line for 17-years to get your hands on one, unless things in production change now. Hint, hint: things will absolutely change, as the electric truck is still in the process of scaling up production volume.

Carbuzz reports the current output for the GMC Hummer EV is just 12-units a day. At the same time, GMC currently has 77,000 reservations. Some simple math estimates that it would take 17 years to get to each one of those at the current pace. To put that in perspective Ford announced earlier this year that they are doubling production to 150,000 units by the end of the year in order to satisfy the current 200,000 reservations on hand, which brings its total daily unit production to just over 400 a day.

One GM spokesperson told the Wall Street Journal that the company is not concerned with the current wait times though as they know they are going through the process of integrating battery cell production. The company is building a new battery plant in Lansing Michigan with its production partner LG Energy Solutions, a plan that will take production from the tens to hundreds to thousands of units produced in a single day, once completed. One contributing factor to the sloth like production is GM says they are trying to take extra care with each unit made, they want to be 100% certain their vehicles are ready for their customer upon delivery.
On top of that, GM says they aren’t worried about anyone jumping out of line for one of their rivals like the Ford F-150 Lightning or Rivians R1S or R1T. The GMC offers unique features that can’t be found elsewhere, at least for now. Quick charging abilities and great acceleration in addition to long range (up to 350 miles) help retain those waiting in line.
