Customers are receiving deliveries for their 2022 Ford F-150 Lightnings, which means people will finally modify the trucks to suit their needs. Garrett from GRT Offroad and Dirt Tires & Donuts Garage recently took delivery of his F-150 Lightning and had some big plans for it. So he invited Bronco Nation to join him while he modified his electric truck and prepared it for a life of adventure.
2022 Ford F-150 Lightning: Overland Build
Garrett decided to equip the truck with Bronze Fuel 18″ wheels with Nitto Recon Grappler 295/70/18 tires wrapped around them. The tires are about an inch taller than what comes stock with the Ford F-150 Lightning, and to check and see how badly they affected the accuracy of the speedometer, Garrett took it for a drive. The wheels are slightly wider than what is stock for the Lightning, but that didn’t seem to affect the accuracy of the speed gauge for the truck very much. He then gave the electric truck about a 2″ lift with the help of Fox Coilovers in the front, using the same shocks they make for the standard F-150. No adjustments could be made to the rear suspension of the vehicle. However, the lift resulted in the need to do a bit of chopping to the truck for proper clearance.
Of course, an Overlanding rig wouldn’t be complete without a tent of some sort, and Garrett opted for a Go Fast Camper to mount to the truck’s bed. Paving the way for plenty of additional goodies to be added in the future to ensure the truck is ready for extended excursions. Garrett noted that the F-150 Lightning did have some extra road noise with the addition of the camper and wheels, but the ride remains smooth. He didn’t mention any changes to the range with the additions, but that would require a trip to notice how that gets affected.
An electric vehicle might not be anyone’s first choice when building an overland rig, as venturing far from any charging stations or electricity could result in getting stranded, but this Ford F-150 Lightning looks adventure-ready.
