The modern-day muscle cars do an excellent job of reimagining the designs from the 1960s and coupling them with modern features. We have the Dodge Challenger, Ford Mustang, and Chevy Camaro, but what if Chevy also brought back the Corvair? That never happened, but a French company by the name of NewRide has decided to give the Chevrolet Corvair that same treatment. And it was on hand at the 2022 SEMA Show, just outside the Las Vegas Convention Center.
NewRide Chevy Corvair 2020: Details
The radical build has been dubbed the Corvair 2020, as it was initially meant to debut at SEMA that year, but the in-person event got canceled. The car is a modern interpretation of a second-generation Corvair Coupe based on a 2019 Chevrolet Camaro. That means this car features a 6.2-liter LT1 V8 engine located at the front, not the back, like where the original car had its engine mounted. And from the interior, it’s very obvious that it uses sixth-gen Camaro bones.
From the outside, there’s no denying that this car looks like a modern-day Corvair. While the windshield and the frame are from the Camaro, pretty much everything else has been changed, and if you didn’t know any better, you wouldn’t know it was a Camaro. Carbon fiber body panels help sculpt the body to appear more classic, and the roof has also been reworked. The headlights come from a Dodge Challenger Hellcat. A valuable addition, not just because they’re round, but because they make sure the engine can breathe despite the car not having a grille.
The side mirrors come from a Volkswagen Polo, and the rounded taillights were taken from the back of a Ferrari 812 Superfast. Custom carbon fiber bumpers and light surrounds the vehicle and help the car look a bit more old school. On the inside, much comes from the Chevy Camaro, with some improvements such as the carbon fiber steering wheel. The car looks impressive and like a Chevy Corvair, even with some oddities.
Suppose you’re interested in this modern interpretation of the Chevy Corvair. In that case, NewRide is setting up plans to produce the car in Orange County, California, with convertible and sport wagon body styles joining the coupe. Color us intrigued.
