At the very end of 2021, General Motors began production of the GMC Hummer EV pickup, delivering just one vehicle before the end of the year to meet its deadline. Over the last year, the factory was hard at work producing the First Edition models of the pickup, and now, over a year since the truck began, the 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV has started production.
2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV Production: Details
GMC executives confirmed that production of the 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV Edition 1 started production Monday. With around 90,000 reservations for the Hummer EV, about 60,000 of them for the pickup and 30,000 for the SUV, it’ll take the company some time to sift through the current waiting list. To put things in perspective, last year, the GMC Hummer EV truck had a total of 854 trucks sold. Though that number will likely increase for 2023 as the GM Factory Zero plant (AKA Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly) continues to ramp up production. Order banks are nevertheless closed, prioritizing current reservation holders only.

As a result of the backed-up order banks, GM’s Global Vice President of Buick GMC Duncan Aldred refused to specify when the order banks would reopen. Production likely won’t ramp up for the Hummer EV as a few factors go against production. The obvious one is the supply shortages, but also, GM has just one of its Ultium battery plants operational at the moment, and that’s the one in Lordstown, Ohio. While that factory can meet GM’s battery needs, the company will still have to be strategic about which electric vehicles get the battery cells until the other two plants come online.
Though we doubt many owners of the six-figure SUV will be taking it off-road, it’s certainly capable. With a 49-degree departure angle and a tight turning radius of just 35.4 feet, it has the dimensions to punch through a challenging trail. Just mind the weight.
