Rohl must swoop for 22-year-old 'hero' to soften blow of Sheffield Wednesday summer exodus - opinion

Sheffield Wednesday should look to League One to soften the blow of the club’s mass exodus in the summer.

Sheffield Wednesday currently have eleven players who are out of contract this summer, but staying in the Championship doesn’t necessarily mean they are all going to stay.

It has been reported that players such as Di’Shon Bernard and Barry Bannan will be offered contract extensions, but the club is still likely to release a long list of stars at the end of the campaign.

The Owls will be relieved to get rid of some of the dead wood from their roster, however the mass clear out will leave them very light in key areas of the pitch. While Bannan is set to stay, it is a concern that their entire midfield is out of contract.

Danny Rohl‘s side are going to need to start bringing in some more talent to rebuild their squad, though the small matter of money could prove to be a problem.

However, one answer to their problems could lie in League One, with Louie Sibley also potentially available on a free transfer this summer.

The midfielder made his breakthrough for Derby County during the 2019-20 season and went onto establish himself as one of the EFL’s most exciting young prospects, with West Ham and Arsenal previously interested.

Wayne Rooney was a huge fan of Sibley during his time at Pride Park and big things were expected of him, however the 22-year-old ‘hero’ appears to have been on the decline this term – despite Derby’s position towards the top of the table.

Is Danny Rohl the man to get the best out of him?

Sibley has netted seven goals and provided three assists in all competitions this season, but has only managed 17 starts in the third tier.

There is clearly bags of talent and potential in the youngster, but his development seems to have come to a halt and he could well need a fresh move and a top manager to help him get back on the right track.

Sibley’s versatility has come in extremely handy for the Rams this season, having played all across the midfield and also left-back under Paul Warne.

If Sheffield Wednesday could bring him to Hillsborough on a free transfer and Rohl can help him build his confidence back up and bring back that quality that Derby fans have previously seen, then it feels like a no-brainer.
