‘He was incredible’: Micah Richards says player Arsenal released was a ‘magician’

Arsenal fans have been lucky enough to see some truly special players over recent years.

Indeed, while the Gunners haven’t necessarily won the trophies they’d expect to win, some of the football on show has been beautiful, and some of the individual talent on display has been breathtaking.

Of course, the likes of Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka in today’s team are incredible to watch, but before this current crop, Arsenal had some other very special players.

Speaking on the Match of the Day Top 10 Podcast, Micah Richards has been discussing some of the best German players in Premier League history, and, as you can imagine, Mesut Ozil came up in the conversation.

Micah Richards praises Mesut Ozil

The pundit spoke highly of the Arsenal legend.

“He was incredible, Ozil, technically, but he wasn’t in the team that had the right system for him,” Richards said.

“Oh he was a beautiful footballer wasn’t he?” Lineker added.

“Ozil, he was magician, if he was in Man City’s side or even at Real Madrid, he was breathtaking. At the end of Wenger’s reign when things weren’t going well. Everyone says that contract affected him, but it was the team. I feel the team around him wasn’t geared for him to play the best,” Richards added.

Mezut Ozil was one of the best around

While Mesut Ozil was way too inconsistent to be considered one of the best Premier League players ever, on his day, he was one of very few untouchable players in the league.

Of course, we didn’t see it all that often, but when Ozil brought his A-game, there wasn’t much any team could do about it.

He could pull every single string against any given opponent, and he was arguably the most talented player in the division for a little while.

Ozil was a joy to watch, we just wish we could’ve seen him at his best a bit more often.
