Enzo Maresca favourite leads the way in incredible Championship stat for Leicester City

A Leicester City ace has emerged out on top in an incredible Championship statistic.

Enzo Maresca‘s side have been far and away the best side in the second tier for the majority of the season.

That notion has somewhat dwindled in recent weeks after a tricky spell which has seen The Foxes suffer defeats in three of their last five games.

Notwithstanding that, there is little doubt City possesses some of the best quality in the division and many have proved themselves to be of Premier League calibre.

One player, in particular, has surprised supporters after producing a number of stellar performances having barely featured under the previous manager Brendan Rodgers.

Leicester are a side that love to dominate the ball and only Southampton (66.2 per cent) can better their average possession statistic of 61.7 per cent, as per FBref.

With that said, it’s indeed no surprise to see a trio of City players make up the top 10 of most average passes per game.

Wout Faes ranks in ninth whilst Harry Winks places fourth and out on top is Jannik Vestergaard, who averages a whopping 101 passes per game, according to WhoScored.

That evinces just how pivotal Vestergaard is to Maresca and how he likes his side to build out from the back.

The towering Denmark international was an outcast under Rodgers last term but he’s been reinvigorated with the Italian head coach.

He wasn’t the most popular figure among supporters for a time but now is one of the favourites at King Power Stadium.

The 31-year-old has proved himself to be one of the best ball-playing centre-halfs in the division.

Leicester City need to tie Jannik Vestergaard down to new contract

Vestergaard is the first name on the teamsheet for Leicester and few would’ve predicted that at the start of the season.

The former Southampton defender is out of contract in the summer and discussions over renewing it are underway, as per Mail Online.

The report further notes that he is open to staying at the East Midlands club, which will be a relief to fans.

It’s imperative he signs a new deal as Leicester may not be able to find a suitable replacement in the summer with the current PSR charge looming over them.

Maresca may be forced to operate in the loan market for City to avoid another breach.
