'We'll see what Spurs say': 20-year-old hints at permanent Tottenham exit this summer

Tottenham Hotspur have 13 players out on loan at the moment and Ange Postecoglou will have to make a decision on the future of a number of those players, come the start of the summer window.

The likes of Tanguy Ndombele, Eric Dier, Bryan Gil and Ivan Perisic are all expected to leave the club permanently come the summer. Joe Rodon is also expected to leave, but not necessarily to Leeds.

Plenty more are out on loan, including 20-year-old midfielder Matthew Craig – who left Spurs on loan in January to join League Two side Doncaster Rovers. He has played 10 times for Doncaster since joining.

Indeed, he has impressed since moving to the fourth-tier side on loan from Spurs – in what is his first loan exit from Tottenham after his senior debut for the North London club, and 56 outings for the U21’s.

Matthew Craig hints at permanent exit from Tottenham Hotspur

Craig has a contract at Spurs until the summer of 2026 and there is certainly a player with potential there. Postecoglou is lacking in options in the middle of the park, with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg potentially leaving.

A player that was regularly involved in first-team team training under the guidance of Antonio Conte. But Craig has opened the door to a potential exit from Tottenham – speaking to the Yorkshire Post this week.

While there is a gap in midfield at Tottenham this season, the chances that Postecoglou turns to Craig is unlikely. A permanent exit will be on his mind – and that could be to loan side Doncaster in the summer.

“I’ve really liked it here. At the end of the season, we’ll see what Spurs say. You have conversations with Spurs about where they think is best for you. I’ve been lucky enough to come here and get some games.”

Craig is a top talent, is he better than League Two already?

A talent, and one we might see in the Premier League in the future – but Craig needs to leave Tottenham. He needs to go and start his career at senior level, and Doncaster gives him that opportunity, now.

The one thing that you would say, is that Craig is already better than League Two level. Perhaps, come the summer, his displays for Doncaster may attract clubs a League up, in the third tier of English football.

Craig should remain patient when his loan at Doncaster comes to an end – in case there are any offers from League One, or even Championship clubs. But crucially, he needs to leave and go and play football.
