'It depends…': Danny Rohl says key Sheffield Wednesday duo now facing late fitness check for Swansea

Sheffield Wednesday host Swansea City in the Championship on Friday.

Sheffield Wednesday return to Championship action with a visit from Swansea City on Friday.

Just eight points separate the two teams, though Wednesday remain in 23rd place of the table after back-to-back defeats, whilst the Swans are up in 15th.

Last time out, Danny Rohl‘s Sheffield Wednesday lost 6-0 away at Ipswich Town following a 2-0 defeat vs Leeds United.

A win or even a point could lift the Owls out of the bottom three this weekend depending on goal difference.

Last time Wednesday and Swansea met earlier this season, the Welsh outfit won 3-0.

Sheffield Wednesday look set to welcome back some rarely-seen faces in the final weeks of the season.

Lee Gregory and Jeff Hendrick look set to return to the side after being left off the squad list, whilst Callum Paterson and Josh Windass are working their way back from injury.

But Rohl could be without key midfield duo Barry Bannan and Ian Poveda, with both picking up injuries ahead of the international break.

Danny Rohl shares updates on Barry Bannan and Ian Poveda

Speaking to The Star ahead of Friday’s clash vs Swansea City at Hillsborough, Rohl gave the following update on Bannan and Poveda:

“After this game we still have seven games to go, and if there are risks then I don’t want any new injuries – that’s what I have to decide.

“They are in training, they are involved, but it depends… It’s the kind of decision I have to make in the afternoon today, and then we’ll see what we can do and what is helpful for the following weeks.”

So far this season, the 34-year-old Bannan has featured 34 times in the Championship, proving to be a standout player once again.

And since joining on loan from Leeds United, Poveda has shone, becoming an instant fan favourite; he’s out of contract in the summer and Sheffield Wednesday want to sign Poveda on a permanent basis.

What could the Sheffield Wednesday midfield look like vs Swansea

Replacing Bannan will be very difficult.

Rohl is now quite light on midfield options with Momo Diaby the likeliest candidate to come into the XI, though he’s failed to impress this season.

Poveda meanwhile has often played on the right of midfield and so Anthony Musaba looks like the likeliest candidate to come into the XI should Poveda be unavailable.

We could also see Rohl change shape; he’s mixed between a back-four and a back-five in the past few weeks, but always with one striker and some pacy wingers behind him.

Marvin Johnson could yet be a candidate to come into midfield and given Rohl more options, with Reece James potentially getting a rare chance to come in at left-back.

Thankfully it doesn’t seem like either Bannan or Poveda have major injuries, so fans will be praying the pair can make a return to action sooner rather than later.

Swansea City will prove to be a much easier task than Ipswich or Leeds, albeit still a very tricky game in their fight for survival.

Kick off is at 3pm on Saturday.
