Ben Davies says 27-year-old who Tottenham have now sold could have been like Jude Bellingham

Tottenham Hotspur defender Ben Davies has said the club used to have a player who’s potential had no ceiling.

The Lilywhites have seen a lot of change at the club over the last year following the arrival of Ange Postecoglou in the summer.

And it has been change which has really benefited the side with Tottenham back in the mix for a Champions League spot.

However, Ben Davies has said there is one player who Tottenham allowed to leave for free in 2022 who really caught his eye.

What Ben Davies said about Dele Alli

One of Tottenham’s most exciting players in recent years, Dele Alli now finds himself on Merseyside having battled a number of issue both on and off the pitch.

His time in north London often left the fans speechless with the youngster from League One taking to the Premier League like a duck to water.

Under Mauricio Pochettino, it looked like Spurs had a player who could have been capable of playing for any side in the world.

And speaking on The Gabs & Jul’s Show, Davies has opened up on just how good Dele really was.

He said: “There was no limit for him. He could have, at that time, been similar to like a Bellingham now. Maybe not as technically as good as Jude is, but Dele used to find a way to score or assist every game. He used to just cause nightmares for opposition players.”

“I remember speaking to Joe Allen at Wales camp and him being like, ‘Dele just didn’t stop running, he was horrible to play against’.”

Will Tottenham receive any money for Dele Alli from Everton?

Having left Spurs in January 2022 on a free transfer, the deal had a lot of potential add-ons which would be achieved through Dele playing for the Toffees.

But, on top of his issues away from football, Dele has also been struggling through injury this season.

It is said Spurs could have earned up to £10m from the deal with Everton.

However, it does not look like the targets will now be met considering Dele has not even been included in a match day squad this season.

Back in February, Dyche provided an update on Dele’s potential return from injury, but it was not one which could offer Spurs much optimism.

“There’s a long way to go. We’ve deliberately kept him back, we agreed with him to give him time and space. Hopefully he’ll be back, we just don’t know,” he said recently.

Dele’s time at Tottenham really was special, here is a round-up of what he returned for Spurs.

  • 269 appearances
  • 67 goals
  • 61 assists
  • 1 PFA Young Player of the Year
  • 37 caps for England
  • 3 goals for England

The money is by no means make of break for Tottenham and Daniel Levy ahead of the summer, but it is a real blow to see Dele potentially sit out as a result of Everton being unwilling to pay up.

It is a real shame to see such a talented player having struggled so much recently and Spurs fans will all just want to see Dele take back to the pitch.

Although he is unlikely to ever return to this Spurs side under Postecolgou, hopefully, he is given a chance at Goodison Park over the coming weeks and months.
