Commentator explains why one Crystal Palace player can "hold his head high" after loss to Bournemouth

Crystal Palace have just been beaten by Bournemouth but one player can hold his head high for his contributions.

It was a 1-0 loss for Oliver Glasner‘s Eagles on Tuesday night which made it just one win in his first five games in charge.

It’s a sobering reality after the euphoric highs of his opening game in charge, but the fact of the matter is he just hasn’t got the players to implement his style with.

Crystal Palace‘s squad for the most part are suited to playing under Roy Hodgson and such a radical change was always going to take time to come good.

As it was when he arrived, the goal should be survival and nothing more in the hopes that next season will be better after a strong summer transfer window.

But even though it was a poor display some players stood out.

Now one has been pinpointed…

Crystal Palace had one standout player against Bournemouth

While Adam Wharton was impressive in midfield, it’s another player that’s been commended by Peacock commentator Jonathan Beck.

As the game concluded, he declared that Dean Henderson was the man who deserved all the plaudits for his display.

“If there’s one man who can hold his head high in that Crystal Palace dressing room, it’s the goalkeeper, Dean Henderson. He’s kept them in the game on numerous occasions.”

This is a really good sign for Palace, considering how important it is that he finds form with Sam Johnstone out injured.

Despite many being unhappy he was signed in the first place, with a substantial fee of £20m, he’s now proving his worth.

Dean Henderson could yet prove his doubters wrong

For Henderson, his early Palace career wasn’t glowing and left many utterly bemused by his arrival.

Johnstone had been the immediate choice this year of everyone not named Hodgson, as Paddy McCarthy and Glasner have both preferred Johnstone.

But with the England international now out injured for a handful of months, it’s Henderson’s time.

With eight games left this season, Henderson will have the aim of proving to Glasner that he should be the first-choice goalkeeper.

Henderson stats for Crystal Palace vs Bournemouth

With an impressive display, Henderson’s stats tell the full story of just how good he was in this game despite conceding one albeit unstoppable goal.

Here are his stats from the game as per FotMob.

  • 90 minutes
  • 8.1 match rating (highest on the pitch)
  • 5 saves
  • 1.21 xGOT
  • 0.21 goals prevented
  • 2 sweeper actions
  • 1 punch
  • 52 per cent passing
  • 2 recoveries

Far from perfect for Henderson but a deserved man of the match display which bodes well for the remainder of Palace’s season.
