‘Surprised me’: Michail Antonio says he’s shocked after what he’s heard about Mikel Arteta lately

Mikel Arteta is a divisive figure in the Premier League.

The Arsenal manager is adored by his own fans after transforming this team over the past few years, but it’s fair to say that rival supporters aren’t so keen.

Arteta does have his critics, he’s been accused of being over the top in terms of his celebrations, being too boisterous on the touchline and over the weekend, he was accused of playing negative football.

Indeed, Arsenal drew 0-0 with Manchester City on Easter Sunday, and in the wake of that game, many have pointed the finger at Arteta, claiming that the way he approached the game was all wrong.

However, speaking on the Footballer’s Football Podcast, Michail Antonio has gone out to bat for Arteta, claiming that he’s been surprised by some of the criticism he’s received lately.

Michail Antonio defends Mikel Arteta

The West Ham striker spoke about the Arsenal boss in the aftermath of the Man City game.

“I’ve heard so many people moan about this game, saying it’s such a bad game, what was Arteta thinking? Blah, blah, blah. He was a genius, I don’t care what anyone says, he has Man City away, every time you go there around this time, Man City beat everyone two or three, and he’s gone there and knows he only needs a point. The amount of people who have complained about that has surprised me. That’s a great point,” Antonio said.

Mikel Arteta won’t care

There’s been plenty said about Mikel Arteta over the past week, but the Arsenal gaffer really won’t care.

The Spaniard went to the Etihad and got a point, and whether the game ends 0-0 or 4-4, a point is a point at the end of the day.

When you’re in a title race you just have to block out all of the noise, and the Arsenal boss can’t afford to pay any attention to this sort of criticism.
