'That's insane': Owen Hargreaves left stunned after hearing how much Liverpool paid for 25-year-old

It was a sensational night for Liverpool as they overcame Sheffield United in the final 15 minutes to return to the top of the Premier League table – scoring twice late on to beat Chris Wilder’s side 3-1.

Liverpool were expected to cruise to three points on Thursday night but the Blades made it difficult for The Reds – with James McAtee missing a sitter to put Sheffield United 1-0 up in the first few minutes.

Ivo Grbic’s horror mistake allowed Darwin Nunez to score, but even then – his opener was cancelled out when Gus Hamer’s header was inadvertently deflected into the net by Northern Irish ace Conor Bradley.

The nerves and anxiety among the Anfield crowd was growing as the game entered the last 15 minutes. But World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allister continued his super form, with a piledriver into the top corner.

Cody Gakpo netted a third and that was three points wrapped up, with Liverpool far from their best. Mac Allister is proving to be the game changer for Liverpool. Glenn Hoddle compared him to Steven Gerrard.

Speaking on Premier League Productions’ Matchday Live Extra, Owen Hargreaves raved about the star – and described his £35m signing as “insane”, suggesting Liverpool have got themselves a huge bargain.

“He’s a fantastic player. I like his mentality, he’s never too up, never too down. Doesn’t look like it’s too much. Playing for Liverpool, the expectation is huge. Players can struggle,” Hargreaves said about him.

“He’s gone in there, give me no.10. I can be that guy. He’s always there in the big moments. How did he cost £35m by the way? That’s insane. You see some transfers for £80m. But him, for £35m, is remarkable.”

Is Mac Allister one of Jurgen Klopp’s best Liverpool signings?

Of course, Mo Salah for little under £40m is the best. Sadio Mane not far behind, while Alisson and Virgil van Dijk have been incredible – even so, for transfer fees that combined, are the best part of £150m.

There’s Andy Robertson for £8m, Joel Matip on a free, Joe Gomez for £3.5m and plenty of others where Klopp has got it right- and spent below what they have been worth to The Reds, Mac Allister is close.

His quality in a red shirt this season has been immense. His assist against Brighton on Saturday – which was praised by Liverpool manager target Roberto De Zerbi – saw Liverpool secure a 2-1 victory.

Mac Allister is a World Cup winner and a game changer. To get him for £35m is incredible, given he is showing the kind of form expected from a player worth three times that. He could be one of the best.
