Newcastle have been considering surgery for £25m star who 'didn't look right' recently - journalist

Newcastle United’s injury crisis shows little sign of relenting.

Questions, of course, do need to be asked.

Indeed, the likes of Joe Cole have stressed that the sheer number of issues Newcastle have been dealt on that front means they cannot simply be blamed on bad luck alone.

It’s difficult to disagree with that, particularly with Eddie Howe admitting the club have made mistakes when it comes to dealing with injured players.

Of all of the players to have suffered this season, one name stands out above the rest.

Joe Willock has opened up on how difficult it’s been for him, having missed 30 games due to hamstring and Achillies problems.

The £25m star is highly rated by Howe but he’s just not been fit enough to make a genuine impact this season, aside from his standout performance during the Carabao Cup win over Manchester United in November.

Sadly for the 24-year-old, his nightmare continued on Saturday.

Howe admitted Willock “didn’t look right” during the clash against Fulham in the Premier League and the midfielder was replaced by Elliot Anderson in the first-half.

Now, some insight into Newcastle’s view of Willock has emerged.

Newcastle have been considering sending Joe Willock for surgery for a month

According to journalist Joel Bland on X (formerly Twitter), the club have been considering sending Willock for surgery for the last month.

It’s unclear as to whether or not his recent injury has made that more urgent at this stage.

Joe Willock provides Elliot Anderson with a real chance

Perhaps sending Willock for surgery now will finally rid of the problem, allowing him to come back stronger for next season.

In his absence, Anderson looks set to step up.

The 21-year-old has been impressing of late and Howe waxed lyrical of his performance against Fulham, so perhaps he can take the chance and run with it.
