Timo Werner issues clearest sign yet on his Tottenham future ahead of the summer

Tottenham Hotspur forward Timo Werner has provided a clear indication on his future in north London ahead of the summer.

The German made yet another start on the weekend when Tottenham took all three points off Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

Timo Werner provided the cross for the opening goal which was converted by Forest centre-back Murillo.

As a result of the Premier League’s rules, the 28-year-old will not be awarded with the assist for the opening goal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

However, he did come into the game on the back of an assist in the game on Tuesday against West Ham with Brennan Johnson poking an identical cross home.

Spurs signed the German on loan in the January transfer window but do hold the option to make his stay permanent before 14 June.

TalkSPORT presenter Alan Brazil has had something to say about that last week with the former Spurs man saying Werner wasn’t good enough to play for the club.

But Postecoglou has been a big fan of Werner since he arrived having provided the 28-year-old with eight starts in the league since January.

What Timo Werner has just said may provide clarity on whether he’ll join Spurs

Werner made his return to the Premier League in the January window on the back of a fairly underwhelming spell with Chelsea.

The Blues signed Werner back in 2020 from RB Leipzig for a fee in the region of £45m.

But the German only lasted two seasons before heading back to the Bundesliga club, who have since loaned him out to Spurs.

Here is a summary of Werner’s time at Chelsea.

  • 89 appearances
  • 23 goals
  • 21 assists
  • 1 Champions League medal

Arriving back in London in January, there will have been a lot of questions surrounding Tottenham’s decision to sign the 28-year-old.

However, he has certainly repaid the trust put in him by Ange Postecoglou who clearly saw him as a player who can thrive in his system.

Since landing at Spurs, Werner has been able to return a healthy two goals and three assists in the Premier League.

But those stats probably do not sum up the forward’s impact on the pitch with the constant threat he is providing from the left wing.

Even Roy Keane has admitted the German is a player who is causing defenders a lot of problems from out wide.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Werner provided a big hint on where he would like to see his future spent.

“I have to smile because I stand next to him [Van de Ven] because we are joking all the time in the changing room and yesterday I said to him, ‘maybe you can score with your head.’ Again with the foot, but next time with the head,” Werner said.

“I’m enjoying it a lot. Especially with this team, with these teammates and the style we play football in this stadium. I love it, yeah.”

Timo Werner stat shows what he still has to improve after Forest win

It was an impressive performance from the German which saw him awarded an 8/10 in our player ratings for the constant threat he proved to be for Neco Williams.

However, there is still a lot of room for Werner to make improvements to his game – which has to be seen positively.

Here is a rundown of his display against Forest.

  • 76 minutes played
  • 56 touches
  • 1 key pass
  • 76% pass accuracy
  • 2/5 successful crosses
  • 1/3 successful dribbles
  • 15X possession lost

Losing the ball through taking players on (in the right areas) can never really be knocked, but Werner has a lot of room for improvement in his turnover of play with poor passing.

His crossing has been impressive since joining Spurs, but there are moments when it looks like a lapse in concentration sees some of his passes not find their target.

He is impressing in a Spurs shirt and perhaps with a full pre-season under Postecoglou’s watch, he could really become the player he was meant to be when Chelsea signed him.
