Wagner says Sheffield Wednesday were 'interested' in Norwich star in January, it's clear who it was

Sheffield Wednesday take on Norwich City in the Championship on Tuesday night.

Sheffield Wednesday welcome top six hopefuls Norwich City to Hillsborough for what should be an enthralling game in the Championship.

The Owls go into this one on the back of a much-needed victory and much-improved performance in the 2-0 win vs QPR last time out.

Danny Rohl watched his side score twice in the second half to claim all three points, with Norwich City also claiming a big win last time out, beating Ipswich Town 1-0.

The Canaries currently sit in 6th and have won four of their last five.

Ahead of what promises to be a crunch match on Tuesday evening, Wagner shared pleasantries about his German compatriot Rohl.

Wagner went on to reveal that he’s met with Rohl in the past and that he had a conversation with him during the January transfer window too.

Wagner told Pink’Un:

“I know him. I met him once as well in a hotel for coffee a few years ago. We were in touch in the winter window as well. He was interested in one of our players, and wanted to have my opinion, and we have spoken about English football, not consistently, but we’ve done this in the past.”

Who did Danny Rohl want to sign at Norwich City?

This mystery player could’ve been a few different names, but there’s concrete evidence to suggest that it was a certain player.

Sheffield Wednesday needed players in different positions in January.

In the end, they almost gave themselves a new spine with James Beadle and Ike Ugbo arriving down the middle, then Ian Poveda arguably as a no.10 but going on to play out wider.

And January has since proved to be an effective window for Sheffield Wednesday, despite mixed reviews at first.

One position that needed boosting but wasn’t in the end was central midfield.

Rohl allowed the likes of George Byers to leave on loan and John Buckley to return to Blackburn Rovers in what’s since proved to be a hasty couple of decisions.

And Sheffield Wednesday were linked with several midfielders, one being Norwich City’s Adam Forshaw.

Reports in January revealed that Rohl and Sheffield Wednesday fancied Forshaw, who eventually joined Plymouth Argyle on a free transfer.

Plymouth also beat Wednesday to the signing of Darko Gyabi on loan from Leeds United in January.

Forshaw has since featured nine times for Plymouth who’ve had a nightmare run in 2024, losing former boss Steven Schumacher and since sacking his replacement Ian Foster.

And the former Norwich man may regret not joining Sheffield Wednesday if the Owls beat the drop, with a win against Norwich City able to see the Owls leapfrog Plymouth in 19th.
