‘I was told’: Journalist shares the real reason Chelsea haven’t sacked Mauricio Pochettino yet

Mauricio Pochettino is being given a lot of wriggle room at Chelsea.

The Blues haven’t been scared to pull the trigger when it comes to sacking their managers in recent years, but despite the fact Chelsea sit firmly in mid-table, the Argentine is still in a job.

Many have wondered how Pochettino has got away with this sort of form for so long, and according to Mark Ogden, speaking on the BBC Radio Five Live Football Daily Podcast, there is a reason why Pochettino hasn’t been sacked yet.

The reason Mauricio Pochettino hasn’t been sacked

Ogden shared what he’s been told about the Chelsea boss and his future.

“He has a year left on his contract so in terms of compensation it won’t cost a lot, but I was told about a month ago that the reason both Pochettino and Eddie Howe are safe unless something dramatic happens, is because both clubs have posted such big losses they can’t afford to sack a manager, pay up, appoint a new guy and pay his compensation. You’re talking £20-25m, and in an era when clubs need to keep their losses small, they can’t afford to get rid,” Ogden said.

Mauricio Pochettino is lucky

Mauricio Pochettino is very lucky to still be in a job.

It’s not an exaggeration to say that Pochettino has been one of the worst Chelsea managers in recent memory, but he’s stayed in a job because it would cost too much to get rid of him and replace him.

This just goes to show how ridiculous the Profit and Sustainability rules have become in the Premier League.

Of course, there shouldn’t be an encouragement to overspend, but there also shouldn’t be extra pressure to stick with a manager who continuously gets it wrong.

Chelsea may need to sacrifice a couple of signings this summer in order to find the right manager to take them forwards.
