Report: £9m-rated player unwanted by Nottingham Forest is now deemed surplus by parent club

Nottingham Forest signed 13 players last summer and three new faces came to the club during the January transfer window. When it comes to loan signings during the 2023/24 campaign, the Reds haven’t been overly successful.

Some might say that Forest have been truly disgraceful when it comes to the loan market during the current season. The club’s permanent recruitment structure hasn’t been bad at all but when it comes to temporary additions…oh dear indeed!

First, there was Andrey Santos who checked in from Chelsea. Despite boasting potential as a wonderkid, Steve Cooper played him for just seven minutes in the Premier League and the Blues recalled him in January to send him elsewhere.

Now, Forest are doing the same with a number of loanees. Giovanni Reyna has checked in from Borussia Dortmund and the Reds are risking the wrath of the Bundesliga outfit by not really giving him many minutes either.

There is also another player currently on loan at Forest who is now facing serious limbo in the summer. Forest look to have made a call on this player, however, and it appears that his parent club might have too.

Gonzalo Montiel now set for uncertain future after Forest snub

When the Reds chose to sign Montiel on a season-long loan it looked like a decent piece of business. After all, the right-back had won the World Cup with Argentina and also the Europa League with Sevilla last season.

However, things haven’t gone according to plan. He was another player who was bizarrely snubbed by Cooper and just when he was starting to get regular game time under Nuno Espirito Santo, injury issues arose.

Last week, it came to light that Forest wouldn’t be choosing to activate the £9 million transfer fee agreed for Montiel as part of the loan. Furthermore, the Argentina international won’t play the required number of games for that to become mandatory now either.

Now, TyC Sports has made a further worrying claim for Montiel to contend with. They claim that Sevilla don’t want him either for next season and they’re desperate to move him on during the summer transfer window.

That could leave Montiel in a bit of a pickle. At 26-years-old, he should get himself hooked up with a new club but he will be hoping to receive some offers following his Forest debacle.

Forest right to offload player this summer

In a different world, Forest might have chosen to sign Montiel. He can clearly play and since Espirito Santo came in, he’s done well in the games he’s been chosen ahead of Neco Williams.

However, the form of Williams is one of the reasons why Espirito Santo must have made the call not to sign Montiel on a permanent basis.

He’s been a standout performer for a couple of months now and adding another right-back when Forest have Williams and Ola Aina makes very little sense.

It’s hard to imagine there being too much angst from the Forest fan base towards Montiel when he does depart and he will simply be hoping to get himself a new club as quickly as possible.
