'Fantastic' player Nottingham Forest sold is now worth over £50m

Nottingham Forest did plenty of transfer business in the summer before the 2023/24 campaign, with 13 players added and Brennan Johnson sold for a club-record £47.5 million transfer fee.

The departure of Johnson didn’t really come as a major surprise. Last season, he had scored eight Premier League goals for Forest and interest was always going to be pretty rife.

A product of theclub’s academy, Johnson served the club with distinction at senior level. He was instrumental as the Reds won promotion to the Premier League during the 2021/22 campaign.

After a slow start to life in the Premier League, the winger came to life after the World Cup. He scored crucial goals for Forest against Leeds and Everton which ultimately helped the team survive relegation.

Offloading the youngster was always going to be likely. Forest have profitability and sustainability regulations to try and meet and Johnson was always the player to bring in a hefty transfer fee.

Now, some statistics have showcased that Johnson is doing exceptionally well at Tottenham. It’s also been claimed how much the 22-year-old is worth following his departure from Forest.

How much Brennan Johnson is worth after leaving Nottingham Forest

Well, a document has been released today by theCIES Football Observatory Weekly Post. They’ve presented the world’s top 100 players have not yet turned 23 and whose transfer value has increased the most in the last six months.

Lamine Yamal, the Barcelona forward, sits top of the list, with Joao Neves of Benfica and Girona defender Savio Moreira in second and third respectively.

Johnson left Forest for £47.5 million in August and now his value has increased already. The player now has an increase of £13 million, according to this report, based on his form for Tottenham.

The forward has been a big part of Ange Postecoglou’s plans at Tottenham. He’s scored five goals and claimed seven assists for his new club and it would appear that his valuation has now soared.

Steve Cooper was a huge fan of Johnson at Forest. He called the player ‘fantastic’ after a 1-0 win over Leeds when the young talent fired home a winning goal.

Forest have to learn lessons from Johnson departure

It’s hard to knock Forest and the hierarchy for selling Johnson. The Reds got deducted four points for their financial breach as it was and had they not sold him they’d have submitted losses way off the scale.

However, there are lessons that can be learned from a Forest point of view. Had the clubs showcased a more meticulous approach to transfers following promotion things might not have got to this point.

In fairness, some lessons were learned in the last two windows. A lot of the permanent signings that have come in have made an impact, withAnthony Elanga and Callum Hudson-Odoi replacing Johnson for a fraction of his price.

If Forest stay up this season it will have to go down as a lucky escape. The club’s recruitment needs to get better and hopefully less of the club’s prized assets will be sold in the future.
