'When I watch them': Ange Postecoglou shares what he really notices about Newcastle right now

Newcastle United have been in good form of late.

While the win over Fulham was far from convincing, Newcastle look as if they are up for the battle for European qualification.

The Champions League, however, is a pipe dream.

Instead, Eddie Howe’s side will battle West Ham and Manchester United for a place in the top six or seven during the Premier League’s run in.

One of the teams who look like replacing Newcastle in the top four is Tottenham.

Ange Postecoglou’s side travel to St James’ Park on Saturday lunchtime and the Australian has been speaking about the Magpies.

He’s previously stressed that qualification for the Champions League last season has not really helped Howe’s team in a football sense this time around and, frankly, he’s probably right.

Still, Postecoglou says he is more than aware of the danger Newcastle still pose.

Speaking to reporters on Friday ahead of the game on Saturday lunchtime, he said (via the Evening Standard): “When I watch them, particularly at home, they’re still a very, very good side.

“I think the crowd gives them a lot of energy irrespective of who they put out there, and the games, irrespective of who they play against, tend to be fairly high tempo because of the energy in the stadium.”

Newcastle’s home form can still save them this season

Newcastle were fantastic at home last season, losing to only Arsenal and Liverpool. Indeed, only Manchester United conceded fewer goals at home than Howe’s side, too (14).

That hasn’t proven to be the case this time around, however. Newcastle have already been beaten three times at St James’ and have conceded 20 times, so it’s not the fortress it once was.

Still, Spurs aside, they have games at home they will be expecting to win. An inconsistent Brighton, Burnley and Sheffield United are all due on Tyneside before the season is up.

If Newcastle can get back to their best and extract maximum points from those fixtures, St James’ will play host to European football once more.
