Chelsea now have to consider selling ‘very important’ star and £50m defender amid financial issues - opinion

Chelsea find themselves in a position where they are probably going to have to sell players in the summer.

As reported by The Times, their wage bill has now gone up to £404m at a time where they need to be wary of profit and sustainability rules.

Chelsea need to try and bring that down and sell some assets to compensate for all of the money they have spent on signings under Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital.

So who are two players that the Blues should consider selling?

Ben Chilwell

Ben Chilwell is by no means a bad defender. After all, this is a left-back who helped Chelsea to win the Champions League a few years ago.

Going forward, he can be extremely dangerous as well. Back in the 2021/22 season, Chilwell only managed to make seven appearances in the Premier League. However, the Englishman still came up with three goals and one assist, which is really impressive for someone in his position.

But looking back at that season and the ones that have followed, that is the problem. Chilwell misses too many games.

The 27-year-old, who cost Chelsea £50m after joining from Leicester City, has struggled to stay fit all campaign. If the Blues can find a buyer, then they should consider offloading him.

Raheem Sterling

Another England international in Chelsea’s squad should be a player who the club consider parting ways with, Raheem Sterling.

At the start of the season, Mauricio Pochettino described him as a “very important” member of the squad.

However, the 29-year-old has been far from that of late and has struggled at Chelsea in general.

Sterling has not started in any of the Blues’ last three league matches and has scored just six top-flight goals this term.

If Chelsea need to make money this summer, which does look to be the case, then Sterling and Chilwell should be two candidates to possibly go.
