Sheffield Wednesday are only weeks away from discovering their fate in the Championship relegation battle.
The squad are currently having to fight for their lives in the second tier, despite many of them not knowing whether they will even be at Hillsborough next season.
Danny Rohl has already demanded his players to divert their full attention to what happens on the pitch rather than off the pitch, despite over ten players being out of contract this summer.
The Owls are likely to begin contract negotiations after their league status is confirmed – though that could well be after the final day of the campaign.
This means that a majority of the team won’t have a clue about their futures until the season curtails, and they won’t know whether the trip to Sunderland is their final match in blue and white.
While this will be sad for many, it seems especially heartbreaking for Liam Palmer and Barry Bannan, who have made a combined total of over 800 appearances for Wednesday.

Journalist Joe Crann has claimed that their situation is ‘really sad’ as they approach what could be their final match at Hillsborough.
Crann wrote on X: “Players come and go at football clubs, but I find it really sad that the West Brom game could be the last time that Liam Palmer and Barry Bannan play at Hillsborough – they’ve no idea on their futures.
“Over 800 games for #SWFC between them, and might not even get a send-off.”
They deserve a real goodbye
Barry Bannan has already criticised the club’s decision not to negotiate contracts yet, while he has admitted he still has no idea where his future lies.
Wednesday’s reluctance to offer players new terms is somewhat understandable, but leaves the team in very difficult positions and makes fighting relegation that little bit harder.
While the squad have definitely been putting in plenty of commitment and hard work, who knows whether things could have been different if many of them didn’t have their contract situations as a distraction.
Palmer and Bannan in particular deserve a real send-off after all their years with the club and fans will be left hugely frustrated if they are to finish the season without any confirmation on their future.
Hopefully Danny Rohl has some plans in place for the pair, but it is certainly some really bad organisation from the club.
