'Excellent' Newcastle player could push for an exit this summer, he wants first team football - journalist

It seems as if one Newcastle player who is currently a regular for Eddie Howe could end up leaving the club this summer.

Newcastle’s season has been underpinned by the club’s injury crisis to date, with there now perhaps being some light at the end of the tunnel for Eddie Howe.

Alexander Isak has returned in outstanding form, and can now complement the excellent work done by both Anthony Gordon and Bruno Guimaraes throughout the campaign.

Say it quietly, but there’s a chance that Newcastle could still sneak into a Champions League spot if fifth place does become a route.

Aston Villa’s win at Arsenal has probably ended Howe’s chances of chasing fourth spot, but having beaten Tottenham Hotspur 4-0, Newcastle must be buoyed in that regard.

That being said, it seems as if there will be considerable change at the club after the season, regardless of what finish is achieved.

Callum Wilson’s time at the club may come to an end, at least that’s what The Athletic journalist Chris Waugh thought when conducting a Q&A yesterday.

And alongside Wilson, the journalist also gave an update on Martin Dubravka’s situation.

Martin Dubravka could leave Newcastle in search of first team opportunities next season

Chris Waugh was asked if Martin Dubravka could leave as a result of the new Profit and Sustainability rules.

And whilst the journalist didn’t think his future would be decided by that reason, he did think there was a ‘decent chance’ that the goalkeeper could go.

Waugh explained the situation for Jamaal Lascelles and Emil Krafth too, who also seem on the periphery of things.

He said: “As for the players mentioned being sold, I think this summer feels like a natural exit point for Wilson, given his age (32), injury issues and contract status (expires next June).

“Lascelles’ injury makes an exit improbable, and the ACL damage suffered by the captain and Sven Botman means Krafth’s versatility may keep him on Tyneside as a useful squad player.

“A goalkeeper is expected to be sought and Dubravka is keen to play first-team football, so there is a decent chance he leaves too, yes, but all of this is dependent on who Newcastle are able to sign as well.”

Aaron Ramsdale interest tells the story

Of course, there’s very little doubt that Nick Pope will return as the club’s number one once he recovers from his shoulder injury.

Similarly, there has also been interest stemming from the club for Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale, explaining Dubravka’s predicament.

The 35-year-old is still capable of an ‘excellent’ display as we saw away to Fulham recently, and it’s understandable that he does want to play first team minutes at this stage of his career.

And he recognises those chances are unlikely to come at Newcastle next season, one way or another.

All that being said, Ian Wright has recently had something to say about Anthony Gordon.
