15-goal Tottenham transfer target outlines key factor behind next club decision

Tottenham are continuing to work towards their summer transfer business, with some potentially big deals in the works.

The summer transfer window is right around the corner and teams are looking to make progress towards building a competitive squad. Tottenham will be one of those clubs aiming to take the next step into moving closer to the top.

Ange Postecoglou has overseen plenty of squad churn over the past year in charge, with plenty of incomings and outgoings.

The next task will be to refine that, adding specific players over the next few months, while moving on those who don’t fit. With every window, Spurs can move closer to realising the ideal squad for their current project.

The type of signing the club can attract may depend on how they end the season, with Champions League qualification still up for grabs.

One option that continues to be linked with a move to Tottenham is Genoa striker Albert Gudmundsson. The 26-year-old has helped fuel the Serie A outfit towards a mid-table finish, clear of relegation concerns.

Gudmundsson has scored 13 goals in the league this season and two in cup competitions, along with four assists. The versatility of the forward, who can play anywhere across the frontline, may be an enticing option for Postecoglou.

However, it appears as though the Icelandic international has set out a deciding factor surrounding his next club. According to Calciomercato, Gudmundsson wants to play Champions League football for next season.

It means that if Tottenham wish to seal the deal this summer, they will have to secure a top four finish in the league.

Ange Postecoglou Champions League verdict

Tottenham boss Postecoglou has already discussed links with players that are looking to join for Champions League football. Speaking at a press conference in early April, the manager said: “I don’t want those players — because they don’t want to come to Tottenham, they want to go to a Champions League club.

“I signed Micky van de Ven this year, he’s not a bad player, is he? And we were in the Champions League? No. That’s a beautiful discussion for me to have. That’s one of the discussions I have, ‘Why do you want to come to Tottenham?’

“Because if you want Champions League football and that’s all you want, you don’t want to come to Tottenham; you just want to go to a Champions League club. I want people to come to Tottenham who know this club, know the challenge we’ve got.

“And we do have a challenge, we’re different to other clubs in that we haven’t had success for a while. I’m looking for a certain type of character that’s going to say ‘You know what, they’re not in the Champions League but if I win something with them, that could mean something for my career and to me. So I’m up for that fight’.

“We’ve had two windows so far and I haven’t had an issue bringing the players I want to this club even though we’re not in the Champions League.”

Tottenham transfer strategy

Tottenham have seen a clear shift in their mentality over the past year. From what was a win at all costs mentality that saw the short-term placed over the long-term, there has been a total flip towards working their way up.

It’s a strategy that may pay off, though it is still early days. However, since then, there’s been a real change in the mood at Spurs – one that many will be hopeful can carry on.
