Danny Rohl and Sheffield Wednesday remain winless whenever 'quality' Owls star hasn't featured

Sheffield Wednesday haven’t enjoyed a strong campaign. But they’ve uncovered some good, individual players this season.

Of course, any decent performer at Sheffield Wednesday has shown himself under Danny Rohl.

The German boss already has more wins to his name than his predecessor Xisco Munoz had games in charge.

Munoz left Hillsborough without ever winning a game whereas Rohl has now won 13, with the Owls currently sitting on 44 points.

But Wednesday are still sitting in the drop zone with three games left.

Sheffield Wednesday will take 7,000 fans to Blackburn Rovers this weekend for what is another huge game near the foot of the Championship table.

The Owls then play their final home game of the season vs West Brom and finish the campaign with a trip to Sunderland next month.

Last time out, Wednesday were held to a 1-1 draw against Stoke City.

Liam Palmer handed the Owls the lead but they were soon pulled back; that draw vs Stoke City though means that the Owls are unbeaten in three and have lost just one of their last five.

However, Rohl’s Wednesday have also won just one of their last seven in the Championship.

And the recent absence of Ian Poveda has certainly contributed to that.

Poveda, 24, joined Sheffield Wednesday on loan from Leeds United in January.

Since then, the Colombian international has featured 10 times in the Championship and has one assist to his name.

But his overall play and contribution to the side has been huge, and Poveda has become an instant fan favourite at Hillsborough.

And in the 10 league games he’s either started or featured in for Wednesday, they’ve won six and lost four.

But in five games where Poveda hasn’t been available to feature for Rohl, Sheffield Wednesday haven’t won, instead drawing three and losing two.

Ian Poveda injury latest

Poveda, previously described as a ‘quality’ player by Rohl, is currently sidelined with a muscle injury sustained in the 2-0 win vs QPR earlier this month.

And it’s not looking good for the midfielder, with journalist Joe Crann predicting that Poveda has now played his last game for the Owls.

Rohl said of Poveda’s injury:

“Maybe we’ll have him again for the end of the season – maybe not… Every injury is not helpful for us, and we know that Ian had an impact.”

Time for one man to shine at Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday have players capable of filling the void; Anthony Musaba and Djeidi Gassama to name a couple.

But Rohl now needs the more experienced, tried and tested Josh Windass to really step up now.

Windass can play in that no.10 role, up front or maybe even on the wing.

He’s provided the goods for Wednesday in the past, coming up with the penultimate moment last season when he netted the winner at Wembley to get the Owls into the Championship.

And with no Poveda in the side, and his absence clearly proving detrimental to the results, Windass really needs to regain fitness and find his form, as his team desperately needs him right now.

Sheffield Wednesday vs Blackburn Rovers kicks off at 12:30pm on Sunday.
