'The benchmark...': Barry Bannan names the club that Sheffield Wednesday can 'learn a lot from'

Sheffield Wednesday captain Barry Bannan appeared on talkSPORT on Tuesday morning.

Bannan has been in a lot of positive headlines of late, after making his 400th appearance for Sheffield Wednesday at the weekend.

And his teammates gave him a milestone to remember with Sheffield Wednesday going on to win 3-1.

The win pulls Danny Rohl‘s side out of the bottom three for the first time under his watch, with just two games left of the season now.

Bannan’s interview on talkSPORT was an interesting one as always.

He discussed a number of topics including Rohl and his first impressions of the former Bayern Munich and Germany coach, as well as the fight for survival in the Championship.

Bannan then also discussed the other end of the Championship table and who he thinks might go on to win promotion this season.

When asked by Ally McCoist who he thinks will go up from the Championship this season, Bannan said:

“I would like to see Ipswich go up, obviously with them coming up through League One last season, I think they’ve been unbelievable. And for teams like ourselves, that’s the benchmark, and you can learn a lot from teams like that.”

How have Ipswich Town done it and what can Dejphon Chansiri learn

Ipswich Town are certainly the fairy tale story of the Championship this season.

They only earned promotion from League One last season, finishing 2nd as well, just two points ahead of Sheffield Wednesday who finished in 3rd and then won the play-off final.

And Ipswich didn’t go crazy in the transfer market last summer either.

They spent less than £5million according to Transfermarkt, making use of the loan and free markets as well.

They signed a couple of long-term targets in names like former Wednesday youngster George Hirst and Jack Taylor, then plugging gaps in the side with loan signings.

But what they did that seems evident, and crucial to their success, is that they built the team around the manager.

Kieran McKenna looks set for a bright career in management after his huge achievements with Ipswich Town, and it’s because he’s at a club who trust in him, and bring in players who suit his style.

So for Dejphon Chansiri at Sheffield Wednesday, backing Rohl and doing what Rohl wants to do with the playing staff and in the transfer market is vital.

Chansiri must give complete control over player signings to Rohl and his team, though there still seems to be a key missing ingredient which is a CEO or director of football.

Ipswich Town have a Managing Director of Sport in Mark Ashton, and he’s earned just as much praise as anyone during Ipswich’s rapid rise up the Football League.

Like Bannan says, there’s a lot for the likes of Sheffield Wednesday to learn from Ipswich Town, and it’s ultimately up to Chansiri to take notes and make it happen, by taking a huge step back and leaving it those who know what it takes.
