Jean-Philippe Mateta has now done something no other Crystal Palace player has done in history

Crystal Palace made it three in a row on Wednesday with a 2-0 win over Newcastle, in the win, Jean-Philippe Mateta made history.

Things just keep getting better for Oliver Glasner as Crystal Palace manager as he made it three consecutive wins, all happening to come against the top eight.

It was a miraculous night as the Eagles utterly dominated Eddie Howe’s side for the entire 90 minutes.

While the whole team deserve plaudits – especially Will Hughes – there is one man who once again has blown everyone away, and that is Jean-Philippe Mateta.

The big number nine added another two goals to his tally for the season which now stands at 14.

In scoring his double, he also broke a Premier League record for Palace, let’s find out what he’s done…

Mateta became first Palace player to score five on the bounce at home

With his two goals against the Magpies, Mateta took his fantastic season to new heights.

The Frenchman became the first Palace striker to score in five consecutive Premier League home games, this and his recent form makes his £9m fee look a bargain.

This is quite the feat and shows how much he loves playing at Selhurst Park, with four in his last two games there.

It is worth mentioning, however, that the feat was achieved by Mark Bright back in 1990, which means Mateta holds an esteemed company.

Ever since Glasner was named Palace boss, Mateta has been a different player and now has eight in nine under the Austrian, an impressive achievement, although this is by no means the end.

Oliver Glasner reacts to Mateta’s second goal

Speaking after the game with the BBC, Glasner spoke about the second goal from Mateta.

“JP is the one who scores, he has a lot of self-confidence and he is working so hard.

“When you see the first goal, he is the one at the end but we won the ball four. five times before. It’s teamwork in the opposite half, working so hard together.

“They deserve all the credit today because they are the guys working so hard and coming together on the pitch.”

He’s mentioned here the confidence that Mateta has, and it feels like this is a big part of him as a player, he thrives on confidence, so now he’s started scoring, he probably won’t stop.
