What James Maddison has been left frustrated about at Spurs

Having joined over the summer from Leicester City, the signing of the England international looked to be one of the best by any side.

Maddison instantly picked up the Player of the Month award for August after taking to life at Spurs with ease.

Inside his first nine league games, the midfielder had already provided a return of eight goal involvements.

But the ankle injury sustained against Chelsea really knocked the 27-year-old off course and he has been unable to rediscover his best form since.

However, there is something bigger than Maddison’s individual displays which have seen the midfielder left disappointed as the season draws to a close.

Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of the game against Burnley, Maddison has admitted he’s disappointed Tottenham are ending the season without a trophy.

“We need to be winning trophies. It’s been spoken about a lot with Tottenham but this club has to be winning trophies,” he said.

“Ultimately, we’ve failed this season on that front in the Premier League and cup competitions because we’re not going to have any pictures holding silverware – which is disappointing.

“There’s obviously a lot of good teams, but that is the drive, that is the standard, the mentality that we have got to have to switch the narrative of Tottenham not winning trophies.”

Ange Postecoglou won’t get away with poor cup runs again next season

This season, Postecoglou has been handed the benefit of the doubt when it comes to Tottenham’s dismal cup runs.

Spurs were dumped out of the Carabao Cup at the first opportunity by Fulham with Postecoglou heavily rotating his side.

And then in the FA Cup, Spurs scraped past Burnley only been limp out of the competition in what was a dismal display against Manchester City.

Although there should be no shame in losing to Pep Guardiola’s side, it was the manner of the defeat which left a bitter taste in the mouth.

Going into next season, Spurs are likely going to have European football also to contend with as there schedule will become even busier.

But this cannot act as an excuse if Spurs are to show more underwhelming appearances in the two domestic cup competitions.
