Tottenham player ratings v Newcastle… James Maddison shines as Ange Postecoglou showcases youth prospects

Tottenham Hotspur took on Newcastle United in a post-season friendly just days after ending their 2023/24 Premier League campaign.

The two sides jetted off to Melbourne, Australia just hours after playing their final game of the Premier League term as the game at the Melbourne Cricket Ground awaited them.

Ange Postecoglou was returning to his homeland after completing his first season as the Tottenham manager where he secured Europa League football.

A bright start for Spurs was maintained in the second half as Postecoglou made multiple changes to provide some of his outcasted players and youth prospects some minutes.

The game ended 1-1 despite a strong display from Spurs which then saw Newcastle take the win through a penalty shootout.

With that being said, here are The Spurs News‘ player ratings for every single player who featured in Melbourne…

Brandon Austin – 6

Stepping in for the Tottenham number one, Guglielmo Vicario, the Spurs academy product was able to put in a solid display as he dealt well with the set pieces swung in his way.

The 25-year-old’s attempt to stop Jacob Murphy’s cross saw the ball fall right into the feet of Alexander Isak who slotted the ball home with ease.

Perhaps he could have done better but the penalty area was packed with players leaving little room to direct the ball away from danger.

Pedro Porro – 6

After netting a stunning goal on Sunday against Sheffield United, Pedro Porro had a pretty quiet evening in Melbourne.

The Spaniard was withdrawn at half-time to draw the curtain on what has been a sensational season for the Tottenham right-back.

Radu Dragusin – 7

After being handed some opportunities from the starting XI in the final two Premier League games of the campaign, Radu Dragusin maintained his spot in the side.

And he put in a solid shift in place of Cristian Romero and has shown a lot of promising signs ahead of next season where he will hopefully be handed more minutes with European football to compete in.

Micky van de Ven – 6

Micky van de Ven did what Micky van de Ven does best. The Dutchman was solid at the back as he usually is as he capped off a stellar first season at Spurs.

Playing without his usual partner in crime, Romero, after the Argentine was left at home due to personal reasons, the only criticism coming Van de Ven’s way was perhaps losing track of Isak as he tucked away a parried save from Brandon Austin.

Emerson Royal – 5

At fault for Isak’s equaliser just before the break as Emerson Royal was unable to keep track of Murphy flying in down the right side before putting in a teasing ball for the Swede.

Struggled in attack, and struggled in defence, the Brazilian’s future is in doubt at Spurs and it is clear they are in serious need of an upgrade when it comes to their backup full-backs.

Rodrigo Bentancur – 7

Rodrigo Bentancur has endured a tricky campaign having returned from two serious injuries over the course of the season.

Considering the Uruguayan has the Copa America to come in a few weeks, he still put in a good shift in the middle of the park before being withdrawn at half time.

Pape Matar Sarr – 7

Played an hour of football and put in a strong display. It has been a turbulent campaign for Pape Matar Sarr but the midfielder’s upside looks incredibly promising.

The Senegal youngster’s effort to beat Nick Pope from well within his own half showed the level of confidence he is ending the season with.

James Maddison – 8

After a sensational start to the season, James Maddison has struggled to rediscover his best form following his return from injury.

There have been some promising indications recently that Maddison was getting back to his best and he was heavily involved down under.

His goal to open the scoring was incredibly well taken as he capitalised on a mistake from the Toon. He pulled the strings in the midfield and clinically took his opportunity after sitting down one of the Newcastle defenders.

Dejan Kulusevski – 7

The Swedish forward was once again playing through the middle and it has to be said Dejan Kulusevski was able to continue from where he left off on Sunday.

It’s not been an easy campaign for the 23-year-old, however, his last two displays may give him – and the Spurs fans – some optimism going into the summer.

Heung-min Son – 8

Having shared some laughs with his former teammate Kieran Trippier, the South Korean provided the England international with a realm tough test down the left side.

What a season it has been for Heung-min Son and his popularity was palpable when Ppstecoglou’s decision to remove him after an hour saw light-hearted boos ring around the stadium.

Brennan Johnson – 5

The Welshman had his usual opportunity to score from a matter of yards out after a stunning cross from the Spurs captain, but he failed to capitalise on it.

Brennan Johnson has shown lots of potential in a Spurs shirt this season, however, he will have to improve his end product as he has left a lot of goals out there in his first season.

Second half substitutes

Ashley Phillips – 7

Enjoyed an impressive loan spell away from Spurs with Plymouth Argyle and was able to give Spurs a taste of what he could offer them next season.

Spurs are said to be looking for another centre-back this summer but perhaps the youngster could be the perfect fourth-choice option.

Put in a really strong defensive shift alongside Dragusin.

George Abbott – 5

Was not too heavily involved after coming on and was withdrawn before full-time.

Alfie Devine – 5

Lost the ball on a couple of occasions but arrives back to Spurs following time away with Plymouth Argyle. It will be interesting to see what lies ahead of him in the summer.

Oliver Skipp – 5

Oliver Skipp entered an exclusive club of players to be shown a yellow card in a friendly game. The midfielder had only been on the field for less than 10 minutes.

The Spurs youth product is a player who the club would be willing to sell this summer if the right offer was to land despite recently showing his versatility by playing at left-back.

Jamie Donley – 7

The player who all Tottenham fans have been wanting to see play more regular football this season and he was handed 30 minutes to end the game.

Provided a magic cross-field ball but was unable to convert from a shot on the edge of the box when he should have done better.

He did also score the pick of the bunch in the penalty shootout.

Bryan Gil – 6

More than likely the Spaniard’s final minutes as a Spurs player as he looks set to depart this summer. Bryan Gil will likely go down as one of the club’s worst-ever signings.

However, it has to be said he was probably the brightest of all the substitutes but lacked the final product. and that was seen with his penalty.

Yago Santiago – 6

Linked up brilliantly with Dane Scarlett just minutes after coming on but it did not end up in a goal. The youngster looked a real threat.

Dane Scarlett – 6

Should have done better with Yago Santiago’s cross just minutes after being brought on to the pitch. But he did offer Spurs a focal point up top.

Tyrese Hall – 7

Another one of Tottenham’s really exciting young talents from their academy. Tyrese Hall came on with 20 minutes to go and replaced Dragusin but played in the midfield as Skipp dropped back into defence.

Showed a lot of confidence for a player who was making his first-ever Spurs senior appearance. Also netted a cool, calm and collected spot kick.

Alfie Whiteman – 3

The man who is living every Tottenham fan’s dream came on for around 15 minutes. Did not get anywhere near any of the Newcastle penalties.

Rio Kyerematen – 5

Was only handed the final minutes to put on a display but did not shy away from demanding the ball.

Leo Black – 5

Only came on for the final few minutes but he looked really bright and was keen to get on the ball.
