Tottenham Hotspur player says 'sorry' to one unhappy fan after Newcastle United friendly

Tottenham Hotspur players can finally enjoy a break after playing against Newcastle United in a post-season friendly over in Australia.

The final day of the Premier League season came and went on Sunday with Tottenham securing a spot in the Europa League thanks to a win over Sheffield United.

Tottenham then took the rather bizarre step to jet straight off to Australia, facing off against Newcastle in a friendly over in Melbourne.

Spurs played out a 1-1 draw as James Maddison’s opener was cancelled out by an Alexander Isak leveller for the Magpies.

The game went to penalties and Newcastle came out on top, winning 5-4 on penalties to claim the victory Down Under.

Ange Postecoglou won’t be losing too much sleep about that and many Tottenham players are probably just glad to get the game out of the way.

Bryan Gil apologises to Tottenham Hotspur fan

The man who failed to score in the shootout for Tottenham was Bryan Gil.

The Spaniard came on as a substitute and was given a chance to score from 12 yards to kick off the shootout.

However, Mark Gillespie made the save, going down low to his right hand side to tip Gil’s effort wide.

Dane Scarlett, Jamie Donley, Tyrese Hall and Oliver Skipp all scored from the spot but it wasn’t enough for Spurs to avoid defeat.

This was a particularly meaningless friendly but Gil has received criticism on social media.

One fan took to Instagram to tell Gil to ‘shut up’ because he failed to score his penalty.

Gil responded with ‘sorry bro’, apologising for mot finding the back of the net.

Gil really shouldn’t have to apologise for not scoring a penalty in a friendly; there are no major consequences from his effort being saved and seeing him receive this kind of stick is disappointing.

It’s surely time for Gil to move on

The penalty situation isn’t a major problem but few would blame Gil for wanting to leave Tottenham this summer.

We are now coming up to three years since Gil joined Tottenham from Sevilla in a deal which saw Erik Lamela head the other way.

Gil’s Tottenham career has just never really taken off and it’s clear that he just isn’t going to play a key role under Postecoglou any time soon.

Tottenham will be looking to cash in on fringe players this summer in order to raise funds for Postecoglou’s spending plans.

Gil is surely one of those Tottenham would be open to selling after three forgettable years as a Spurs player.

The 23-year-old certainly still has talent and a fresh start elsewhere may be best for all parties as the transfer window looms.
