N.J. juvenile detention center worker gave his cell phone to inmates, officials say

A 33-year-old employee at a youth detention center let inmates use his personal cell phone, authorities said.

Tyrell Jones provided the phone to people housed at Atlantic County Juvenile Detention Center-Harborfields in Egg Harbor City, the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office said.

The Juvenile Justice Commission tipped off the prosecutor’s office about the alleged incidents, which took place last year.

Jones, of Atlantic City, was charged earlier this month with official misconduct and knowingly providing an electronic communication device to a person confined in a juvenile detention facility.

Hired in 2021, Jones is paid an annal salary of $46,115, according to state pension records. Officials did not say if Jones is still employed at Harborfields.

Attorney information for Jones wasn’t immediately available.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit at 609-909-7666 or go to the prosecutor’s office website at ACPO.Tips and provide information by filling out the form anonymously.
