£37m player now seems impossible for Crystal Palace to sign as Arne Slot targets him for Liverpool - opinion

One of the main Crystal Palace targets over the past six months now looks like he’s out of the Eagles’ grasp with the reported Liverpool interest.

In a bid to push toward a seventh-place finish as Joachim Andersen has so ambitiously eyed for next season, Crystal Palace have work to do this summer.

The squad Oliver Glasner has at his disposal is of course strong, however, below the starting 11, it struggles to live up to his new standards.

This would create a real concern if any other current stars were to depart this summer, Palace could be left short at Selhurst Park.

The list of targets to strengthen is seemingly endless but now one player who has long been linked could simply be out of reach.

Matias Soule now attracting Champions League interest

One player who has been linked with Palace on countless occasions since the turn of the year is Matias Soule of Juventus, who has just spent a year on loan at Frosinone.

The height of the links even saw an apparent bid made in January to bring Soule to Selhurst Park. His excellent performances this season have led to him being on the radar of clubs with Champions League football.

Now, Calcio Mercato have reported that Soule has emerged as a target for Aston Villa this summer along with Arne Slot at Liverpool who sees the winger as a top target ahead of the summer transfer window.

To add to this, new Juventus manager Thiago Motta is said to be trying to convince the hierarchy that Soule is worth keeping, and Soule certainly feels like a Motta player.

Surely this rules Crystal Palace out of the running

Given the new interest in Soule, it’s possible that Palace simply just can’t compete with what Liverpool or Villa can offer just yet, regarding European football and prospects of silverware.

In a year this might be different, with the clear upward trajectory that Palace is on under Glasner, however right now there’s little chance Soule would reject Slot’s reds for Palace.

Palace therefore may have to turn attention elsewhere, and the options have already been linked with Jaden Philogene, Jonathan Rowe and Gabriel Sara all linked and capable of playing in the same position as Soule.

Of course, this only matters if Michael Olise ends up leaving, of which there are no imminent reports of this happening, despite it being likely.
