"All came together": Gareth Southgate now shares three reasons why he named Adam Wharton in England squad

Gareth Southgate surprised everyone after naming four Crystal Palace players in his squad, now he’s shared why he chose Adam Wharton.

Crystal Palace will have been absolutely gutted to see this season end after the final few weeks which saw some of the best football of the club’s history being played.

The Eagles went seven unbeaten to end the season with six wins and some incredible results which left fans craving more but will have to wait until 2024-25.

However, there is good news for fans as Palace will get to watch multiple players in action this summer for their nations.

None more so than England who have four Palace players in the provisional squad that Gareth Southgate named last week. Now he’s shared his verdict on one player that he’s called up.

Gareth Southgate explains why he’s chosen Adam Wharton

As the England squad prepare to begin preparations for the European Championships this summer, Southgate has spoken to the official England YouTube channel.

In this interview, he was quizzed on an abundance of topics around England and one of them was Adam Wharton, as he named three reasons that he’d chosen the 20-year-old.

“Adam Wharton, transfer in the middle of the season. He really adapted to life in the Premier League well.

“Very composed with the ball, Palace finished the season well so that all came together for that group of players and coach at a nice time.

“He has only just got into our under-21 group but we have seen enough to suggest he’s a player we would like to see more of and find out a bit more about.”

Wharton will no doubt blow Southgate away in training and with his talents being different to others in the England team, he could find himself heading to Germany.

This isn’t the only time Southgate has spoken about Wharton as he previously raved about what he loved about Wharton’s game.

Wharton performing well at Euro 2024 could be bad news for Crystal Palace

If Wharton heads to Euro 2024 and has a barnstorming tournament, it could actually be terrible news for Palace.

Being a top talent, any raise to his profile this summer could attract outside interest with his qualities likely to be in demand at a couple of clubs.

Rather selfishly from a Palace point of view, it’s likely better he doesn’t actually get used, however, we’ll be delighted for him personally if he does.

No doubt Europe’s top clubs will be watching closely, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see Wharton named along with Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze this summer as being linked with the continents best.
