Report: Where Gareth Southgate is considering using Crystal Palace No.20 Adam Wharton for England

Adam Wharton is with the England squad preparing for the Euros this summer, now it’s been reported where the Crystal Palace player could fit in.

This summer Euro 2024 be on the headlines as England goes into the tournament with high hopes. For Crystal Palace in particular, this could be exciting to watch with four players in the preliminary squad.

Of the four, they all stand a fairly good chance of heading to Germany, with other options not quite as good as the Eagles players in their positions.

Of everyone though, Adam Wharton is the player people will be most excited about watching if he makes the final cut of the squad.

Now Gareth Southgate‘s plans to use him have been shared in a report.

Where Adam Wharton might play for England this summer

Wharton’s rise has been explosive from the Championship to bonafide Premier League star, to now on the verge of becoming a star for his country.

Costing just £22m in January, Wharton has turned out to look a bargain and he’s now attracting interest from Europe’s elite as Bayern Munich circle for a move.

However, according to a report by the Independent, Wharton’s potential position for England has been revealed.

It’s explained that Southgate is considering utilising Wharton as a ‘balancing midfielder’ alongside Declan Rice at the Euros this summer.

This implies that he’ll be in direct competition with Kobbie Mainoo and Conor Gallagher for the role in midfield alongside Rice who would quite clearly be a shoo-in.

How many Crystal Palace players start in England’s best XI

This summer there could be as many as four Eagles players heading to Germany with England, but how many actually get into the starting line-up?

Sam Johnstone probably stands little chance with Jordan Pickford almost guaranteed to be starting as he is England’s number one.

Next up is Marc Guehi who actually has a strong chance of playing this summer as he’s arguably England’s best centre-half and should be starting alongside either Harry Maguire or John Stones.

Wharton is unlikely to begin the summer as a starter, as Southgate will probably choose Mainoo, however, he has all the ability to force his way in.

Eberechi Eze also faces the tricky task of getting minutes, with Phil Foden likely to be the first choice on the left, and Jude Bellingham in the centre.
