‘A priority’: Chelsea pushing to sell ‘great’ player this summer, he only joined last year - journalist

Journalist Simon Phillips has claimed that Chelsea are already looking to move on one player who they brought in last summer.

The previous summer transfer window was highlighted with the addition of Moises Caicedo for a club-record fee, however was backed up by the signing of numerous top young stars.

The most successful of those has clearly been Cole Palmer, who picked up both awards at the club’s in-house awards night.

They looked to address the lack of a first team goalkeeper by signing two last summer, with it being intended originally that Robert Sanchez would be joining as the number one at Stamford Bridge.

However, by the time 2024 rolled around, he was firmly out of the starting team, and Djordje Petrovic had taken his place as the number one.

It looked as if Sanchez had won over Mauricio Pochettino, with the manager at the time describing him as ‘great’ early in his Chelsea career.

Robert Sanchez available to be sold

Now, Phillips has claimed on his Substack that the Blues are already looking to move the Spaniard on just a year after signing him.

He said: “I don’t have anything concrete on goalkeepers or left backs yet, but those are two positions still very much being looked at for this summer. A goalkeeper has become a priority because Enzo Maresca wants an expert ball-playing goalkeeper to be the pinnacle of his build out from the back possession-based football.

“Robert Sanchez I am still hearing, as reported last week, is the likely casualty of a new stopper coming in. Chelsea will look to move him on and at least recoup the fee.”

It remains to be seen if a new goalkeeper is brought in this summer, or if incoming manager Enzo Maresca is told to work with what he already has.

It has already been claimed that the Italian is an admirer of the 24-year-old, although his limitations when it comes to passing out from the back does look as if it could spell danger for his future.
