‘I thought’: Gareth Southgate shares what he thought Chelsea’s Cole Palmer actually did wrong for England

Chelsea star Cole Palmer opened up his international account last night as England got in some good minutes before the European Championships.

The Three Lions won 3-0 against Bosnia and Herzegovina, with two Chelsea players on display.

Conor Gallagher also put in a fine performance in the middle of the park, although it was Palmer who took the headlines as his last 12 months just continued to get better and better.

Peter Crouch has stated that he believes the 22-year-old should actually be named by Gareth Southgate in the starting side when the international competition gets underway.

Despite his goal last night, his manager has mentioned an area that he thought the Chelsea star could improve on in the future.

Southgate says Palmer tried to be ‘too precise’

He said to Channel 4: “Very good. I thought they both played with freedom. Ebe has got lovely movement to go past people in the centre of the pitch, he has power, so really happy with that he did.

“I thought Cole a couple of times was trying to be a bit too precise, trying to get a touch to open up the shot, when maybe he could have got his shot away a bit earlier a couple of times and got a couple himself.”

Palmer to be key for Enzo Maresca

It remains to be seen if he is given the chance to impress again in England’s final warm-up game against Iceland on Friday night, with the likes of Phil Foden and Bukayo Saka not in action at all yesterday.

Blues fans will already have their mind on how Palmer will perform under the new manager at Stamford Bridge, with it being announced yesterday that Enzo Maresca was going to take over ahead of next season.

The Italian has experience working with the England international from their days together in the Manchester City academy, and he will be crucial to the new boss succeeding early on in West London.
