Report: Chelsea don't think 'world-class' player will fit Enzo Maresca's system

It does not look like Chelsea will be signing one centre-forward for Enzo Maresca this summer.

The club confirmed Enzo Maresca as their new manager on Monday.

One area of Chelsea‘s squad he may want to strengthen is up front.

The Blues finished last season with Nicolas Jackson as the only recognised No.9 at Stamford Bridge.

They have been heavily linked with the likes of Napoli’s Victor Osimhen and RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko. Journalist Simon Phillips recently claimed that the club are confident that they can win the race for the latter this summer.

Chelsea have serious doubts about striker

Right now, Chelsea’s focus seems to be on signing Sesko.

Their interest in Osimhen looks to have cooled, with The Athletic reporting that they have ruled out making a move for the 25-year-old in the summer transfer window.

According to the same outlet, one reason is because Osimhen does not suit Maresca’s system.

Chelsea are now almost certain to sign another centre-forward like Sesko or no one at all.

Osimhen made 32 appearances this season, scoring 17 goals along the way. It is the same number Jackson managed at Chelsea, though the Nigerian played fewer games.

Benjamin Sesko can be a good alternative to Victor Osimhen

For a lot of Chelsea fans, Osimhen was probably the dream.

His goal record at Napoli this term was decent, while the campaign before that, he managed to find the back of the net on 31 occasions.

“Over the last couple of seasons, he’s really made that move into a world-class striker,” AS Monaco’s Folarin Balogun said to ESPN in an interview last year.

However, as far as alternatives go, Chelsea could do a lot worse than Sesko. The Slovenia international scored 14 goals in 31 Bundesliga appearances this season.

At 6ft 5in, he looks perfect for the Premier League and only turning 21 last month, there is time for him to get even better.

If Chelsea really have cooled their interest in Osimhen, which does look to be the case, then Sesko is one forward who they should now be prioritising.
