Report: Chelsea monitoring 'one of the most promising' defenders in Europe, deal depends on one factor

Chelsea are keeping tabs on ‘one of the most promising’ defenders in Europe, according to a recent report.

The West Londoners endured a topsy-turvy campaign last year but started to really find a rythmn towards the latter stages.

Such is why Marucio Pochettino’s sacking came as a surprise, with Leicester City’s Enzo Maresca now taking the reigns.

Whilst Chelsea’s squad is packed full of quality, it’s evident they are missing certain profiles and it seems Maresca has identified a centre-back to perhaps replace Thiago Silva.

Chelsea considering Ousmane Diomande

According to GiveMeSport, Sporting centre-back Ousmane Diomande is liked by Chelsea chiefs who could make a move for his signature this summer.

Diomande, who is considered ‘one of the most promising’ defenders in Europe, is also attracting interest from Arsenal and Manchester United.

The 20-year-old has been long linked with a number of top clubs on the continent and it now seems Sporting are willing to cash in on their prized asset.

The only stumbling block for Chelsea, however, is the price as GiveMeSport columnist Ben Jacobs admits Sporting’s valuation could deter them.

Chelsea should consider other options

Since the Africa Cup of Nations, Diomande’s form has dropped and it appears Sporting are eager to move him on whilst his stock remains high.

Reports have suggested his price tag has dropped to £42m due to his slightly decline, which is a significant discount from his previous £68m valuation.

Chelsea chiefs will be aware of this and perhaps should consider moving on to other targets who fit Maresca’s possession-based brand of football.
