Jurgen Klinsmann names the ‘fantastic’ Tottenham Hotspur player who should be safe in the transfer window

Tottenham Hotspur head into Ange Postecoglou’s third transfer window at the club with high hopes for the future.

Look at Tottenham Hotspur’s two windows under Ange Postecoglou and there have been very encouraging signs.

Micky van de Ven enjoyed a stunning first season at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and has already become one of the Premier League’s top centre backs.

James Maddison and Brennan Johnson maybe blew hot and cold at times but are still quality players to build around.

Last summer’s business was impressive and more of the same will be needed in order for Tottenham to kick on as Postecoglou wants.

The Spurs boss will take a fifth-place finish in his debut season but will be aiming higher next season – and there is plenty of business to be done.

Jurgen Klinsmann on Guglielmo Vicario

Van de Ven wasn’t the only 2023 signing to really shine – and possibly set the bar very high for other incoming signings.

Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario arrived from Empoli and represented something of an unknown addition.

There were strong links towards David Raya – who ended up leaving Brentford for Arsenal – at the time before Tottenham struck for Vicario.

Early question marks over Vicario quickly subsided though as the Italian enjoyed a strong first season in the Premier League.

Yes, Vicario can certainly stand to improve on the command of his penalty area and especially from corners, but he was a superb shot-stopper.

Vicario should go into next season with plenty of confidence and he has now been praised by former Tottenham striker Jurgen Klinsmann.

Klinsmann has told ESPN that he thinks Tottenham need signings across the pitch – but not in goal.

Klinsmann suggests that Vicario was simply ‘fantastic’ in his first season and believes that Tottenham can focus elsewhere with the goalkeeping spot locked down.

“Spurs definitely need reinforcements,” said Klinsmann. “I think they need in all departments. Let us leave aside maybe the goalkeeper Vicario. He was fantastic throughout the year. But you need to go through the back four. You need to go through, especially the defensive midfield and you need another one or two strikers that deliver you at least 15 goals,” he added.

Tottenham Hotspur may still need a goalkeeper

Nobody will expect Vicario to be leaving any time soon and he almost certainly won’t be replaced.

Tottenham may yet need another goalkeeper though given question marks over backup stopper Fraser Forster.

Reports suggest that there are up to 15 players that could leave Tottenham this summer – and Forster’s name was on that list.

The veteran stopper is a great presence around Tottenham and provides bags of experience, which will no doubt have been vital for Vicario’s first season.

Forster isn’t exactly ideal for Postecoglou’s style of play in terms of playing with the ball at his feet and Spurs may well look to replace him.

Brandon Austin is staying put but may not be ready to be second-choice just yet, potentially leaving Tottenham to find somebody else to push Vicario moving forward.
