Tottenham fans are all saying the same thing after claims James Maddison will miss out on Euro 2024

Tottenham Hotspur star James Maddison is reportedly set to miss out on Euro 2024.

Gareth Southgate is set to select his final 26-man England squad for the tournament in Germany after a final friendly against Iceland on Friday.

The Three Lions boss has seemingly already made a decision over James Maddison, with the Tottenham midfielder set to be snubbed.

Sky Sports claims that Maddison has already left England’s training base at Hotspur Way after being told the news.

The 27-year-old delivered a bright cameo display against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Tuesday evening but it hasn’t proven to be enough to earn him a spot on the plane to Germany.

While the news will be a huge disappointment for Maddison, his form since returning from an ankle injury in January is likely the main reason he’s missed out.

The Englishman got off to a flyer at Tottenham under Ange Postecoglou but even found himself benched towards the back end of last season.

Now, Tottenham supporters have reacted to the news on social media and many aren’t too disappointed with the decision.

Tottenham fans react as Maddison misses out on England squad

After seven goal involvements in his first 11 Premier League games for Spurs, not many would have foreseen Maddison missing out on Southgate’s squad at that point.

But a run of underwhelming displays since the turn of the year has ultimately cost Maddison his place at the Euros.

The form of the likes of Tottenham target Eberechi Eze and Cole Palmer is likely to have come into Southgate’s thinking too.

Despite the huge disappointment from Maddison’s point of view, Spurs supporters are in agreement that it could benefit the player and Tottenham.

One fan wrote: “I’m not mad about this.”

Another added: “Not surprised, but I feel like he’s played well for England when given the chance.”

“Suspected this would happen. Sad for him, not mad at it for us. Having a Maddison with something to prove is something I look forward to,” one Tottenham fan said.

“Let’s be real it’s deserved. He needs a wake up call and to get back to his level,” another pointed out.

A fan also said: “Disappointing for the player but selfishly I don’t want any of our players at tournaments.”

“It’s the right call. At his best he would be there easily but he’s far from his best and others are performing.”

When was the last time Tottenham didn’t have a player representing England at a major tournament?

You have to go back to the World Cup in 2014 for the last time a Tottenham player wasn’t part of a major tournament with England.

Spurs have been blessed with plenty of talented homegrown players since, including the likes of Harry Kane, Kieran Trippier, Dele Alli and Eric Dier.

Of course, all of the above have since moved on and barring Maddison, Spurs don’t currently have any players pushing for a spot in Southgate’s squad.

The upcoming Euros will also be the first time no Tottenham player has made the England squad for the European Championships since the tournament in 1992 in Sweden.

There’s no getting away from the fact that this is a huge blow for Maddison after he made such a bright start to his Spurs career. The playmaker will have a point to prove when he returns for pre-season and hopefully, he can rediscover his previous form.
